I yank at my shirt’s top button, dragging a hand down my face, the space closing in on me.

“Get out.”

She has the audacity to lean back further, holding herself up on her elbows.

“What does it say about you if you can’t even answer one question?”

The nerve of her. Was she always like this? I miss the little mouse that would shiver and scurry away at the slightest provocation and not try to barrel through my walls.

“Answer me.”

“Or what?”

“I thought I was the coward in this relationship, but it’s you. Quite disappointing.”

With that, she hops up and leaves.

I can finally breathe again.

Coward, my ass. Fear has nothing to do with it.

The following morning, Violet sits at the breakfast table, her phone in her hand. Her neck is the only part that is exposed. I groan at her childish behavior.

“The clock is ticking,” I remind her.

As she brings the spoon of yogurt to her mouth, her eyes remain glued to her phone, a smile playing on her lips. A pang of jealousy hits me; if she’s chatting with that fucker, I’m going to kill him.

“Who are you talking to?”

Ignoring me, she types a reply. I ball my hand next to my plate, shoving food down and plotting the death of an innocent.

I try again. “Violet, I’m talking to you.”

Marie comes into the dining room. She sighs as she stops to observe us.

Violet is complicated. She’s ruined the perfect harmony of this house.

Marie walks over to her and asks, “Anything else, my dear?”

“Do you mind if I’m not here for lunch? I have a meeting.”

“No,” I say. Both women stare at me, daring me to say it again. “You can’t leave the property.”

I don’t care if Violet thinks I am holding her captive. It’s too dangerous. I take a few calming breaths and decide to change my approach. “Where do you want to go?”

No answer. No access to her skin for my greedy eyes, and I know she’s doing it to punish me. I’m losing my shit by the second. I doubt she wants to deal with that.

“None of your business.”

“You’re my fucking wife.”

“On paper.”

I am tempted to show her how “just on paper” we’re married, so that she will feel me for days between her thighs.

“I’m down to rectify that whenever you’re ready.”
