“We’re leaving. These three grate on my nerves.” He takes my hand. I watch with fascination at how my smaller one fits in his larger one.

“We love you too,” the girls say to his back. His eyes are only on me—it’s such a heady feeling. I glance over my shoulder. Alessandra gives me a thumbs up.

Cameron looks at me intently as we make our way outside. “Are you all right?”

“I am. I had fun.”

“What happened back there?”

“I’m sure you don’t want to know.”

His brows scrunch together. “Do they actually talk about their sex lives?”

“I think I’m still in the probation phase.”

“We both know you have nothing to contribute so...”

Instead of a smug expression, he waggles his eyebrows. I smack his chest playfully.

“So, they’re taking you to the bunker?”

“Where is it?”

“In the woods.”

“Like an adventure? I stopped having those a long time ago.”

“When?”

“Wouldn’t you like to know?”

“I know something happened, but strangely, I can’t find anything. All my leads are dead ends.”

“You’re investigating my past?” I ask, voice rising, but then I remember I did the same.

“I found nothing which raises my suspicion. But I know it has something to do with your sister.”

“Why do you think that?” I stutter.

“Your parents used a fertility clinic under a different name, and they had very particular demands.”

I stumble, and he catches me. I’m sure my father never thought someone would dig that deep.

“Why?” he asks.

“You know what you have to do in order for me to tell you.”

When we reach the house, I sidestep him and go straight for my room. I’m about to shut the door when Cameron wiggles inside.

“I’ll find out eventually, so why not tell me?” He insists.

“Why, when you don’t tell me anything?” My voice ends with a plea.

“Fine. Come to my room and you will start getting your answers.” He turns on his heels, leaving me completely bewildered.

Curiosity drives me. I inhale a lungful of air. In the mirror, I take in my black blouse, black jeans, and blond wig with blue tips. I can do this, I encourage myself before walking out of my room.

I raise my hand but hesitate and before I can knock, he says from behind the closed door, “I smell cowardice.”
