I smile as I picture our eventual reunion on the Cape.

She leans in towards me. “Girl, if this man’s bed game has you this dreamy, then I need to meet him. Maybe he will have a brother, cousin, or uncle that’s single and ready to mingle.”

“Are you finally interested in having a relationship? I bet your mom is ecstatic.”

For as long as I can remember, Mara’s mom has been hoping she would find someone to settle down with and start a family right after graduation.

I laugh as she vehemently shakes her head back and forth.

“No way! My mom would be the last person to know. She is so ready to plan my wedding, whether or not I go through with it. I’ll have to elope just to get some peace and quiet with my future spouse.”

Our laughter is cut off when our professor walks in and lays a briefcase on the desk at the front of the room.

He looks young, like a few years older than Mara and I.

Unlike the other professors, he is wearing a pair of fitted blue jeans and a collared t-shirt. He seems to not have a care in the world.

“Since attendance doesn’t matter the first week, come up here and grab a syllabus. Read it, memorize the due dates, and get a start on this semester.”

His voice is soft, but he seems eager to get this class over with. Most professors want to keep us in our seats for as long as possible.

“If you start now, you will finish early, which I would highly recommend, since most of you are graduating this year. The more you do now, the less you will have to come to class later this semester.”

Mara and I look at one another, dumbfounded.

She leans in close and whispers, “Is he saying that we woke up early for nothing?”

I watch as other students grab a syllabus off his desk and walk out the door. “Seems to be the case.”

Grabbing my bag, I slowly make my way up to the front desk and grab a syllabus. I watch as Mara gives the professor a sexy smile.

Is she flirting with him?

As I pull Mara through the open classroom door, the professor smiles back and says, “See you next class.”

Mara stares at me like I have two heads. “What?”

“I was saving you. Plus, you can’t date a teacher.”

Didn’t we just talk about her getting into a relationship?

“It’s not like I am jumping into marriage or anything. Although his bed might be tempting.”

Her laugh is loud as I gasp and start to walk away. She has to jog to catch up to me.

“Relax, he is just eye candy. At least I now have a reason to wake up early and come to class.”

Leave it to Mara to crush on a teacher.

Changing the subject, I ask, “Do you want to go grab some food since we have a couple of hours to burn?”

“Yes! I could really go for a big bowl of cereal. I need the sugar.”

She skips ahead as I am left behind, staring at her skipping figure.

Luckily, we live only a couple minutes' walk away. She bursts through the door, leaving it open for me.

“Jake?” I quietly call out to him as Mara heads straight to the kitchen.
