And to be alone to figure out how the hell I was going to ask my husband to pay a six thousand dollar medical bill.

When I walked through the front door, Nash was just leaving. He tipped his hat at me before slipping out the back door. Eli was cleaning up Everlee’s dishes from lunch.

“She eat?” I asked.

He nodded. “Ate everything. She was looking a little worse for wear when I walked in here. Said she’s fighting a headache, so I made her go lay down.” He nodded toward her phone, which was still unlocked on the coffee table. “Think that’s the source of her headache.”

I arched a brow at him before walking over to where the device lay. I picked it up, not above prying into my wife’s private matters if it meant taking care of her. Frowning, I read over the email before grunting and walking to my office without another word. Once I was sitting down, I pulled up my banking information and called my attorney.

“Tripp Walker,” he mused. “What can I do for you?” The last time he’d heard from me, I’d told him I’d gotten married and he needed to get our funds released so I could give Everlee the portion of mine that she was owed.

The attorney hadn’t been very surprised. Just wished me well in my marriage.

“My wife has a bill collector hounding her. I need you to handle it for me. I have my banking details when you’re ready.”

I heard some keys clicking in the background. “I’m ready,” he finally said. “Hit me.”

I read off the numbers to him. “Make sure it’s taken care of by the end of the day. And then do me a favor and do a check. See if she has anything else about to hit collections or already in it. I won’t have anyone or anything having a negative effect on her.”

“Yes, sir.” More keys clanked in the background. “How is your wife, by the way? I know you said she’s been having a rough go of it with her diabetes.”

I sighed and rubbed at the bridge of my nose. “She’s hanging in there, and I’m doing everything I can to keep her healthy.”

He hummed. “Just about all you can do, Tripp. I’ll get all that taken care of. No worries. You have a good day, you hear?”

“You, too, Brad.”

I ended the call and stood from my desk, leaving my office. Poking my head into our bedroom, I spotted Everlee curled up on her side, her lips parted the slightest bit, her dark lashes brushing her cheekbones.

I quietly moved through the room and leaned over the bed, brushing a kiss to her cheek. “Sweet dreams, sweetheart,” I whispered. Then, I tucked the blanket in closer around her and slipped back out of the room as if I’d never been there in the first place.

CHAPTER 8

Tripp

How did a man fall for a woman as fast as I did for Everlee? It didn’t even seem normal. I was pretty sure I was going crazy. The crap I’d pulled since meeting her—forcing her to the doctor, forcing her to marry me, then moving her into my room—was only things men absolutely insane did. This wasn’t even my normal behavior. I was the quiet one, the chill one. The one that never made rash decisions.

Yet, with Everlee, rash decisions were the only ones I’d been making.

She made me crazy.

I leaned my head back, letting the hot water spray over my face before I turned and shut the water off. It’d been a long, tiring day. Two cows got out, and chasing them back into the field had been a lot harder than it should have been. They were stubborn and didn’t want to be put back where they belonged until they were good and ready.

Kind of like my wife. Not that she was a cow. Just that she didn’t want to be boxed in either. But I had no choice. She kept having bad episodes, and they were freaking me out. I was at my wit’s end.

After drying off, I pulled on a pair of sweats and then stepped out of the bathroom, hanging up my towel on the door on my way out. I paused when I saw Everlee standing at the foot of the bed, looking nervous and unsure.

“You okay?” I asked her.

She swallowed thickly and nodded. “Last night, I was already asleep when you came to bed.” She looked over at me, and her cheeks flushed red when she saw I was shirtless before she quickly darted her eyes away. I resisted the urge to smirk.

I made her nervous. And man, if that didn’t do something to my ego.

“Nervous?” I asked her as I pulled back the covers and slid into bed.

She sank her teeth into her bottom lip, and my body came alive in response. She looked so beautifully innocent when she did that, yet so enticing. Settling my arm beneath my pillow, I patted the top of the covers. “Come on, Ever,” I coaxed. “I don’t bite.”
