Chapter One

Scribe

Three days after King’s wedding...

I moaned, rolling over in my bed as my hand landed on something soft and pillowy. I lightly squeezed, then grinned. Opening my eyes, I saw the pretty Bethany Jane sleeping next to me.

I snuggled closer to her.

I sure hoped she liked morning nookie because Scribe-a-saurus was up and ready to play.

There was nothing better than morning sex, in my opinion. Hands down, the perfect way to start any day.

Rain, snow, sun shining... morning sex.

Full day of hard work... lots of morning sex. Didn’t matter to me. I was all about the morning wood.

However, when a coffee mug flew by my head, I quickly covered myself when I heard, “You low-down rotten piece of shit!”

I knew that voice.

Shooting up out of bed, I went on Red Alert.

I knew that tone.

It was time to shit and get!

Ducking for cover, I quickly slipped from my bed and onto the floor, as Marie hurled my riding boots at me.

By the looks of her, she was ready to rip my dick from my body.

“What the hell?” I shouted, sitting up only to get hit in the head with my hairbrush, knocking me back down onto the floor.

Evasive maneuvers were required.

Body crawling across the floor, I searched for my jeans.

Finding them, I quickly put them on.

“Now, darlin’, I don’t know what brought this on, but let’s go to Beth’s coffee shop and we can talk about it.”

“I don’t drink coffee, jackass!” Marie yelled, throwing any item she could find in my direction.

I knew I should have locked my front door.

Frank and Priest had been trying to tell me for months that eventually someone would walk in and try to kill me. That it was inevitable because of my past.

But I hadn’t believed them.

Why, you ask?

Because I live in Mayberry fucking R.F.D!

Well, technically Rosewood, Virginia, the quintessential cookie-cutter town, with some of the friendliest people around. And let’s not forget the oodles of tourists that show up unannounced for fairs, carnivals, ski slopes and hiking.

Didn’t these people have hometowns of their own?

Why did they have to come here?
