Not even a flicker of movement.

Nothing.

Groaning, I got to my feet and reached for my jeans. Pulling them on, I sat back down on the bed as Sugar settled beside me. “What’s going on with you? You’re not your usual joyful, happy self.”

“It’s nothing.”

“Oh, it’s something or your cock would be making me a happy woman right now. So, spill.”

“I met someone.”

“A girl?”

I nodded. “Yeah. But she’s nothing like anyone I’ve dated before.”

Sugar chuckled. “Hate to break it to ya, Scribe, but you don’t date. You fuck, and if you haven’t gotten in this woman’s pants by now, then I would think you might be serious about her. So, who is she?”

“Henley Never.”

“Devlyn’s baby sister!” Sugar gasped, then laughed. “Good luck, Scribe, ‘cause when Devlyn learns you like Henley, she’s going to lose her shit. She is very protective of her baby sister. Besides, Henley is different. She’s very shy and rarely shows her face in town.”

“Why?” I asked, genuinely wanting to know.

Sugar sighed. “It started when Henley was little. You weren’t around back then, but a lot of us went to school together. While Devlyn and I were in the same grade, Henley was two years behind us. Anyway, Henley was a little bitty thing and a lot of kids picked on her because of her looks.”

“Why? She’s beautiful.”

Sugar nodded. “She is and doesn’t know it. From the moment she was born, her parents knew there was something wrong with her eyes. Poor girl wasn’t even out of diapers before Dr. Powell stuck glasses on her. Anyway, by the time Henley started school, she was already self-conscious about her glasses. Most of us thought the glasses made her look smart, prettier, but there were some who bullied her. It went on for years until Devlyn caught Zach Zimmerman hurting her. Dev beat the living shit out of him that day.”

“Zimmerman? The kindergarten teacher?”

Sugar nodded. “Yeah. He’s still a fucking loser. Look, Scribe, if you are interested in Henley, then you need to be careful. Henley is a sweet girl, but she is very shy and suffers from severe anxiety when put in certain positions. Don’t get me wrong, she can protect herself, but it’s the social settings that trigger her. That’s why she stays on the mountain. Dev shocked me when she told me that Henley was going to fill in for her at the mayor’s office. It has to be taking a toll on her.”

Sitting there listening, I wondered if that was why she hadn’t been online lately. Generally, she did daily readings, but lately it’d only been on the weekends.

“What else can you tell me about her?”

Sugar looked at me and slowly smiled. “You really like her, don’t you?”

I nodded. “Yeah, I do.”

Getting to her feet, she said, “Well then, I think we need some tea. Finish getting dressed and I’ll put the kettle on.”

Reaching for her hand, I smiled. “Thank you, Sugar. For everything.”

“Don’t thank me yet. You still have to tell Devlyn.”

The sun was rising over the mountain tops when I pulled in front of the clubhouse. Shutting off my engine, I rushed inside the building to find King pacing the common room, waiting for me.

“We need to talk. Now.”

Wondering what the fuck I’d done now, I quietly followed him inside his office. The second I was inside, he shut the door and ordered, “Take a seat, Scribe.”

Doing as I was told, I said nothing as King walked around his desk and sat.

“What’s up?”

“Have you made contact with Ms. Never?”
