So I was good to go.

I didn’t have anyone to impress. It was just me and Apollo, all alone on top of Rosewood Mountain, and my massive book collection.

Seeing the time, I sighed.

“Well, Apollo. Another book down. It wasn’t too bad this time. The book was a bit much. Still having a hard time figuring out the whole three men to one woman ratio. I mean, how do they know what goes where? Anyway, I think I’m going to have to block Hungryman493 soon. He’s getting more aggressive every time he logs on. What do you think?”

Apollo looked at me before turning away and heading into his little hut I built with Popsicle sticks. I even painted the damn thing, thinking he would love it. Bastard never said thank you, so who knows what he thought.

With my cup of sugary cream in hand, I headed into my office when my house phone rang. Sighing, I shook my head as I picked up the phone I had hanging on the kitchen wall.

“I don’t care who you hooked up with tonight, Devlyn. Just kick the asshole out, go to bed because you have work in the morning.”

A sneeze blew through the phone.

“Bless you,” I muttered.

“Thank you,” my sister said barely, sounding miserable before coughing.

Taking another drink of my coffee, I smiled at Apollo giving her the opportunity to get herself together, as I impatiently waited for what I knew she was about to ask. My sister Devlyn was the worst when she was sick. If she thought for one second, I’d be willing to leave my little piece of heaven and trod down the mountain to tend to her whiny ass, she had another thing coming.

I may be a recluse and avoided people as if they had the plague, but I had a life.

“I need a favor, Sis.”

“No. I’m not taking care of you. Go see Claudia.”

“No, it’s not that, but thank you for your fucking concern. I can feel your love from here.”

“The last time you got sick, you passed on your germs. It took me damn near a month to get over what you infected me with. I love you, but you are on your own this time.”

“I need a favor, Henley. It’s important.”

“What?” I groaned.

“I need you to fill in for me at work tomorrow.”

“Oh, hell no!” I said adamantly, shaking my head. “Not for all the tea in China. Ain’t happening.”

“All you have to do is make sure the mayor sticks to his schedule. With the holidays around the corner, it’s going to be a light few days for him. Please, I am begging you. I can’t lose this job.”

“Then hire a temp!”

“Hell no,” my sister moaned. “If I do that, and the bitch is better than me, she could take my job. Do you know how much I make working for the mayor? Please, Henley. It’s just for a few days. I’ve got an appointment with Claudia later today. Once she prescribes me antibiotics, I just need to be on them for twenty-four hours, then I’m no longer contagious. Please, Sis. I’m begging you.”

Sighing, I whined. “I don’t know, Devlyn. There are a lot of people that work in the mayor’s office. Besides, I have my own job.”

“It won’t interfere with your job, Henley. I swear you won’t have to talk to anyone in the office. You work strictly for the mayor. No one else. You will be out of there by five, which still gives you plenty of time to do your online live reads.”

I groaned.

“You do this and I will make you those sugar cookies you love so much.”

I narrowed my eyes. “You burned them the last time. They were bricks.”

“Fine, I will buy them from Beth.”

“And a pound of fudge, a box of chocolate chip scones and I want one of her coffee mugs. The pink one with the Sons of Hell MC emblem on it.”
