“Lili? You have Lili?” she squeals, jumping into my arms.
“Yes. A friend of mine is bringing her to us as we speak.”

“Thank fuck. Now because your sister should be here shortly, I won't punish you for all the shit you did today, but make no mistake, that ass is going to be red and sore.” Her pupils dilate and she licks her lips. “But first, let’s get ready for Lili.”
According to my watch we have about forty-five minutes until they get here, which is perfect for us. It takes us twenty to drive to Wal-Mart during which time Julep sits on the passenger side putting items for her in the cart so it can be ready for pickup when get there.
We pull into the house with five minutes to spare but it is enough time for her to throw on a pink unicorn bed set and a unicorn lamp before they are pulling into the driveway. My wife, in her excitement, doesn't wait for them to get out of the car. She opens the door and is down that stairs before Lili gets out of the car.
“Jules,” Lili cries when she sees her sister. She makes a running leap into Juleps arms and I officially become a soft ass. Watching these two who have obviously by all accounts been through so much finally be reunited, I turn into a sap.
“Thank you my friend,” I tell him, patting him on the back and handing an envelope for his trouble.
“To see this, it was worth it. What you are doing is an amazing thing, Hubris.” I nod as he gets back in his car. Turning my attention back to my girls, I hear Lili whisper.
“You did it, Jules. You found somewhere for us to be safe.” My fucking heart breaks. This little ten year old angel just wanted safety. What kind of world do we live in? I walk over to them and introduce myself.
“Hello Lili. My name is Harlan and I am so happy to meet you.” She looks at her sister for confirmation.
“Lili, he is my husband and this is our home.” She looks at the both of us and grabs Julep’s hand.
“Are we going to be happy here?” She asks her sister but I can't stop myself from answering.
“Damn right you are angel. Real happy. Do you want to see your room?”
“I get my own room?” Her enthusiasm at something as simple as me has me vowing in my head to spoil the hell out of this girl.
“You sure do.” I wrap my arms around both of them before leading them into the house. I stop at the door when it closes and listen to the sound of both of their feet going up the stairs and it hits me. I have a family. One that I will keep for the rest of my life.

Six Months Later

“They are fine. Everything was normal. Our daughters are perfect.” I throw that last part in there waiting for him to figure it out.
“Thank fuck. I mean I knew they would be, but with my age I just wanted us to check.” People think only women’s ages count when it comes to babies with defects and disabilities but that is untrue or so my husband and the doctor say. I know the moment his brain finally catches up. “Wait, daughters? You said daughters.” I nod my head and try to hide my smile. “No no. There has to be a boy in there. Right? I mean right?”
