Oh, my goodness. That was beyond romantic. But I had my own surprise for him too. Carrying the flowers in one hand, I reached out and grabbed hold of him and said, “Come in. It’s going to get cold if you don’t.”

He stepped inside and closed the door behind him, but didn’t budge any further. “Ovi, what is all this about?”

“Didn’t you read the flowers?” I asked.

“I did.”

“In the order I told you?” He nodded.

“Number one, ‘no working late’. Number two, ‘no late afternoon snacks’, which was tough because I worked through lunch. Number three, ‘dress comfortable’. I know it is odd, but I am comfortable in a suit.”

Bet you’d look great with it off. I felt my cheeks warm. I couldn’t allow my mind to go down that path.

“Okay. You have proven that you read the notes. Then what don’t you understand? I am cooking dinner for us tonight. And then watching a movie.”

“I figured that out. That’s why I’m here. But why not just pick up the phone and call me or text me?”

He didn’t get it. “Niko, I wanted it to be fun. I know you were at work, and so was I, but it’s Friday. Time to relax and enjoy yourself a little.”

“Fun? That’s not how I would describe work,” he said.

“Is there a reason why it can’t be productive and a fun place to work?” I asked.

He just looked at me. “I...I don’t know how to answer that. I hate bringing this up, but the factory isnoplace to havefun.Ibby just sneezed at his workstation and looked at what happened.”

“Niko, I wasn’t suggesting that the fun happens on the factory floor.” I sighed. I thought I could tell him after dinner. It wasn’t really a movie that I had for us to watch as much as videos of company outings that took place in other countries. “I guess I better explain now, and we can eat later.”

“Okay. You have my attention.”

“How about we sit,” I said. He let me lead him to the couch and I placed the flowers on the coffee table. “Now, I had a dream last night about the factory.” Wasn’t going to elaborate on the details of that crazy dream. “And it brought me to the idea that employees need to enjoy working for you.”

“I pay them very well,” he said, defensively.

I chuckled. “I’m not talking about money. I’m well aware of how generous you are. But I am talking about added fun into the mix which will help increase productivity.”

“Fun equals increased production? Explain, please.”

Gladly.

“You are looking for a way to help meet your deadlines, right?” I asked.

“I am.”

“I’ve spent the day researching my idea. Do you know that most Fortune 500 businesses do things for their employees besides just a fair wage?”

“Like what?”

“Have a day that you do not open. You host a company party and invite their wives and children. Make the activities based on fun things to do in groups. Get them to play together, and bond.”

He laughed. “So the way to increase productivity is by not producing anything for an entire day?”

“I know it sounds crazy, but you would be surprised by the number of companies that do it. If you don’t believe me, ask Dean. He does it at his company. No one can question if the Hendersons are successful. They are known worldwide.”

“I don’t think of fun when I think of them,” he said.

“I’m telling you, they do. Or should I say, their employees do. I really think you should give it a try,” I said. “What do you have to lose?”

“A day of productivity,” he said. I rolled my eyes and was about to get up when Niko grabbed my hand pulling me closer to him. “I’m joking. I get what you’re saying. I have no idea what you want me to plan for them, but I will give it some thought.”
