Good reason for that. All I had done as a child was dream about leaving Tabiq. I hated my life here. That wasn’t the case for Ovi. She had been happy here. She had everything anyone could’ve asked for. She was only leaving now because she doesn’t believe there was anything left for her here. That was not true.I am here. The factory is here.

I tried explaining that to her, but she didn’t want to hear anything I had to say. I wasn’t sure why. It was as though shehad a wall up around her. It didn’t make any sense. If she wasn’t going to listen to me, then I needed to find someone else to talk to her.

Pulling my phone out of my coat pocket, I thought about dialing that number for Trye again. Maybe if he knew what he was putting Ovi through, he’d snap out of it and come back home. But there was a chance that he would encourage her to go as well. Out of sight, out of mind.

I needed to know more about what Trye was thinking before I gave him any information about Ovi. The only way to do that was to speak to him.

Once again, a woman answered the phone, “Hello, may I help you?”

Yeah. Leave Trye alone. His daughter needs him.

“I’m calling for Trye Mayas,” I said, hoping that he wasn’t there. That she would tell me she didn’t know anyone by that name. The odds weren’t good, but one could hope that Bennett was wrong and this wasn’t where Trye was.

“One moment and I will get him for you,” she said.

Damn it.

When someone picked up the phone again, I recognized the voice immediately. “Hello.

“Trye, It’s Niko Rio.”

His voice filled with panic and he asked, “Is everything okay with Ovi?”

Glad you still care.

“Yes and no. Physically, she is fine, but she needs you here,” I said.

“I can’t come home now.”

“Of course you can. Just tell your girlfriend or whatever she is, that yourfamilyneeds you. She is more important than whoever that woman is. Hell, Trye, I can’t believe you just upand left Ovi like that and didn’t even tell her where you were going.”

“I did tell her.”

“A lie. Because I know you’re not on a fishing boat like she believes. Where the fuck are you?” I knew the number was somewhere here in Tabiq, which kind of pissed me off even more. “If you needed the comfort of a woman, then you could’ve sorted that out quietly and still been here for Ovi. She doesn't deserve this,” I snapped.

“What are you talking about?” he asked.

“The woman who answered the phone. Or have you forgotten her that quickly just like you did Ovi?”

“I have not forgotten my daughter. I love her so much. That is why I left. I did it for her,” he said.

“I highly doubt that,” I snarled.

“It is true. I was no good for her or myself. I needed to get away and sort things out. Heal. That’s what I’m doing, or trying to,” he said.

“And that woman is doing that for you?” I questioned.

“No. She is here if any of us need something, but that is all. It’s not who I talk to. Not the one who is helping me get through my...grief.”

There was more than him there? What was I missing? “Trye, where are you exactly?”

“I’m at a place that Dr. O’Connor arranged for me. A place where I can escape from everything and work on all these emotions and feelings that I have. That I don’t know what to do with. If I had stayed, then it would have been Ovi who would have felt my wrath as I sorted through all of this pain. She’d hear the hateful, bitter things that came out of my mouth instead of the doctor.”

Doctor?

“You left to seek treatment to deal with the loss of your wife?”

“She wasn’t just my wife. She was my life. Without her, I am...nothing. Ovi needs me, but nothing like I needed my wife. I provided for the family, but she was the one who held us together. She made that house a home. She made us a family. Without her...I’m nothing.”
