That was the truth. Just some of us didn’t realize it until we lost it. “I will be happy to do that.”

“Good. Now I need to go. I am scheduled to meet with the doctor. After this call, I will have a lot to talk about with him. Goodbye, Mr. Rio.”

No matter how many times I said call me Niko, he wouldn’t. I stopped correcting him. “Take care of yourself.”And I’ll take care of Ovi.

The call ended and instantly I started researching everything I could on the internet about TNBC. What I learned shocked me. Trye wasn't lying. The mortality rate was not good. But it also mentioned BRCA gene testing. Had it been done on his wife? Is that why Dr. O’Connor said Ovi has an increased risk of developing cancer?

I wanted to call Dr. O’Connor and ask the question, but I already knew what he would say. He couldn’t discuss a patient's information. I was going to do something I dreaded. Talk to Ovi about her mother.

It was getting late, and I didn’t want to wake Ovi, so I opted to send her a text message. She could read it when she woke.

THANK YOU FOR DINNER. WOULD YOU LIKE TO GO OUT TOMORROW?

I wasn’t expecting a reply, but one came.

YOU’RE WELCOME. WHAT DO YOU HAVE PLANNED?

Had no plans, well not any she wanted to hear. But she kept mentioning fun. Whatever I came up with, had to be that. Dean wasn’t around, but I’m sure Bennett could make arrangements for us to utilize things at the resort.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT JET SKIS?

I hadn’t used them in years, but I wanted us to do something active. Outdoors.

NEVER BEEN ON THEM. I THOUGHT YOU SAID YOU HAD A LOT OF WORK TO DO.

Figured she would throw my words back at me. I can do the same.

SOMEONE TOLD ME I NEED TO LEARN TO HAVE FUN TO BE MORE PRODUCTIVE.

I could visualize her eye roll.

THAT PERSON IS VERY WISE. LOL OKAY, I’LL GIVE THEM A TRY.

Awesome. Now I just had to make it happen.

GREAT. I’LL SEE YOU TOMORROW. SLEEP WELL.

SWEET DREAMS, NIKO.

I had no plans to sleep tonight. I needed to learn everything I could about TNBC and the latest treatment. As I suspected, Tabiq had treatment, but not the most advanced medicine. Understandable, since we also had a very low cancer rate. But I also noticed that over the past ten years, it was slowly increasing. What had changed?

It wasn’t something in the food or the water. Not environmental either. As people became more comfortable with going to the hospital, then things were getting diagnosed.

I hope Ovi isn’t going to become a statistic.

CHAPTER 16

Ovi

After the flop dinner we had, I hadn’t expected to see him before Monday when I went to work. Niko never said otherwise, but once I told him I was going to leave Tabiq, I could see how distant he was. No matter how much I talked or tried to make him laugh, he had already checked out.

Maybe that is why he texted me so late last night. He was feeling guilty for not appreciating all my efforts to the fullest. He watched the presentation I put together, but all he did was nod. Never even asked me a question or showed any excitement at any of the ideas. Odd, since he offered me the job as the employee relations person.

At least seeing him today, I would be able to gauge what he was thinking. And if I couldn’t, then I was going to ask outright. I did not like to play games, not that I thought Niko did either, but something was off, and I couldn’t put my finger on what it was.

He kissed me goodnight when he was leaving, but I wasn’t rushing him out. It was his idea to leave. I had picturedhim staying much longer, or maybe even overnight. It was unprofessional, but since I had practically given him my notice, it wasn’t like we were breaking any rules. I was almost unemployed.

Funny how I could rationalize breaking the rules when it came to Niko. The first time we kissed, I should’ve put a stop to it, but I didn’t. Not because I couldn’t, but because I didn’t want to. I liked kissing him. I wanted to do a lot more of it last night. But me and my big mouth had to ruin it by talking shop. I wasn't going to make that mistake again. From now on, unless in the office, we don’t talk about the office.
