“Niko, I will take the test.”
He got up and pulled me into his arms and squeezed me tightly.
“Thank you, sweetheart.”
“You can thank me by not sending me to the hospital with broken ribs,” I said.
He loosened his hold and looked down at me. “You don’t have to do this alone. I’ll be with you every step of the way.”
“Thank you, Niko, but I can do this.”
“I know you can. But you don’t have to. You have me,” he stated.
He kissed me as though sealing the deal, but I hadn’t agreed to anything more than taking the test.
“If you’d like, I can call Dr. O’Connor and make agreements for us to go to the hospital tomorrow and get tested,” he offered.
“Niko, I promise, I’ll do this. I’ll call myself.” This was my body. My life. “Now, is there any other topic you want to discuss to stress me out with?”
He shook his head. “That wasn’t my intention.”
“I know that.”
“But there is one more thing I’d like to discuss,” he said.
I rolled my eyes.I should’ve kept my mouth shut.“What is it?”
“The company outing. I think we should have it soon.”
“Wait. You’re really going to go through with my suggestion?” I said, surprised. I thought with my leaving he’d brush it aside.
“Of course I am. Do you think you can pull it together for Friday?” he asked.
“You mean in five days?” I asked. He nodded. “Niko, something like this takes months of planning, not days.”
“Okay, then will you agree to stay at least long enough to do the company outing?” he asked.
Oh, you’re good.
He knew that I couldn’t say no. It was my idea, and now whether it happened or not, was all on me. Did a matter of a month or two make a difference? I was still going to leave. But it meant Niko and I would have a little more time together.
Time to fall in love. And then it would be even really harder to leave.
“I need sixty days to pull it off if you want me to do it right.”
“Take all the time you need,” he said.
I looked up at him and said, “You’d like that, wouldn’t you?”
He nodded. “I’m a selfish man, Ovi. I want as much time with you as I can get. And to prove that, from this point on, I am taking the weekends off.”
“Niko, you have so much on your plate already. How can you do that and keep production going?” I asked.
He kissed me, then said, “This will be my motivation to work twice as hard during the week. Now, since we talked and ate, how about we head back to your bedroom?”
“Tired?” I teased.
He scooped me up in his arms and said, “Not at all.”
