“You want the Cup, right?” he asks.

I nod.

“Then get your ass back on the ice so we can really play hockey. We need you out there.”

Fuck.

He’s right.

It’s not like we’re the only guys on the team. The Racketeers are good. They were good before I got here. But now we’regreat. Because with me on the other side, my wingman can play hard. Because with him across from me, I can play with everything I’ve got. I’m not carrying this team alone. None of us are.

Unless I’m on the bench.

I take a deep breath. “Yeah. Got it.”

“What are you two doing? Exchanging pedicure tips?” Coach Phillips asks. He scowls at Alexsei. “Is there a problem?”

Alexsei meets my eyes. I give him a slight nod that says we’re okay.

“No way, Coach,” Alexsei says. “No problem. I was just tellin’ McNeill here how hot his sister is and how I think I should take her out after the game if we win.”

Coach Phillips swings to look at me. I’m frowning at Alexsei. He’s just fucking with me, but I know he knows I have a sister. He knows exactly who Luna is. They were flirting their asses off at my birthday party last month.

My eyes narrow. “And I was just telling him that there’s no way in hell she’d go out with a hitless wonder like him.”

Alexsei laughs. “You think your sister is keeping track of my stats?”

He says ‘stats’ as if it means something other than hockey.

I nod. “If she’s paying attention to you at all,” I say. “Fair warning, she’s got high standards.”

That’s my not-so-polite way of saying my sister would never date a hockey player. My sister is a hockey fan. But she’s been around hockey guys all her life thanks to my early interest in the sport and all my friends being around the house constantly growing up. And, of course, many of them hit on her over the years. She is not impressed by jocks. Never has been.

“Oh, fuck.” Alexsei gives a little groan. “I do love a challenge.”

Then with a grin, he flips his mask down and hoists himself back over the wall to rejoin the game as other players barrel into the box for their rest.

“Alexsei wants to date your sister?” Coach Phillips asks. “Oh, that will fucking end well for all of us.”

I laugh. “Nah. Though that doesn’t mean he won’t ask.”

“You going to sit over here and talk about women the entire game?” he asks, giving me a frown.

“I was just trying to loosen him up,” I say, watching Alexsei go straight at Simons and bang him into the opposite wall. I grin. “And hey, if he actually does have the balls to ask my sister out, at least he’ll finally get us some fucking points first.”

As we watch, Alexsei picks up the puck mid-ice, passes it ahead to Lamont, who then passes it back and with a flash of his black stick, Alexsei sends it into the net.

I whoop and then grin at Coach. “See? I’m a fucking genius at the pep talk.”

“I’ve noticed that you and ‘fucking genius’ are not put into sentences together very often,” Coach points out.

“It’s a travesty I’m not more appreciated around here,” I say, nodding as if he was complimenting me.

Grinning, I return to the end of the bench where Michael is sitting.

“You’re smiling,” he says, surprise clear on his face.

I nod. “Yeah.” I frown then. “Weird right? I’m still hurt, my team is losing, and I think one of my teammates might ask Luna out.”
