“Dani—” Michael says on top of me.

“Fucking hell,” Crew mutters.

But she just holds up a hand, stopping all of us. “What you just said is very true, Nathan," she says, looking at me. "No matter where I'm at in my life, we have to be honest about the fact that you are all at different places. I don't want to be with just one of you. Just because Michael and I happen to match up where we are right now and what we want, does not mean that I don't love you and Crew just as much. I want to make this work, but I think we all need some space and time to figure out what that looks like. And, frankly, I don't think I can be here with you right now to do that."

"You can't just walk out, Cookie," Michael says, his voice quiet and calm. “We can talk this through.”

"I just need some time," she says to him. There's a honk at the curb outside. "Andrew came to get me," she says by way of explanation. “And I think the three of you need time.”

At least she called my driver and not a random taxi or Uber.

"One night," I tell her.

She shakes her head. "I'm not promising anything. We need time to work this out.” She looks at Crew. "And I'm not testing you. I'm not saying that you have to agree with me on everything for us to be together or anything like that. But I really feel like we all need time to think about what happened tonight. This is real life. This is how a relationship progresses and gets more serious. We obviously need to think about how we all feel about the situations ahead of us, what we want the future to look like before we really talk about it together. Because obviously when we try to talk about it before we have really considered all the possibilities, we end up hurting each other."

And then she's gone. Out the door, down the steps, and into our waiting town car.

Crew gets up from the couch, shaking his head. "An hour ago, I was sitting here watching television, hoping you guys are having a good time at dinner and looking forward to seeing my girlfriend when she got home. Now my girlfriend is engaged to another guy, and she’s moved out."

Michael scowls at him. "You mean the girlfriend that you have because of me?"

"Fuck off, Hughes. You think that Dani is with me just because you had the idea that we should share her? What's to say that she wouldn’t have picked me if she had to choose between us?"

"Obviously, I'm the one who's best suited to give Dani what she needs," Michael says.

That is probably the most combative Michael has ever been with us.

"Enough of this," I say firmly. "This doesn’t do any of us any good. We are all with Danielle. She is all of ours. So we need to figure out what we all want going forward."

"I'm going downstairs," Crew says, stomping out of the room and toward the door to the basement where his game room is.

So I guess we’re not going to talk about it tonight.

"I'm heading upstairs to bed," Michael says. “In my room.”

Yeah, there’s no fucking way we’re all going to be sleeping in the family bed together tonight.

But I stop him when he gets to the bottom of the stairs. "Do you think she's okay?"

He blows out a breath and shakes his head. "No Nathan, I don't think she's okay."

"Should one of us go after her?"

He shakes his head again. "I don't think she wants any of us right now. At least she's going back to the apartment. Luna will take care of her."

I sigh. "Luna is going to be so pissed at us."

Michael meets my gaze. "Maybe rightfully so."

Then he turns and heads upstairs without another word.

I sink back onto the couch that I hate in the living room of the house that I thought I hated.

Yeah, maybe, rightfully so.
