“That’s putting it lightly,” Fernando adds. “Remember the first two weeks with them in Colorado?”

I snort, “Just a little initiation.”

“Initiation? Those two tricksters hid hard-boiled eggs in the back of my closet. The stench took weeks to disappear,” Reign grumbles.

Shay doubles over in laughter. Her lioness tail pops up as she’s bent over. “Chuh, I wish I was there. I can only imagine what they put unnuh through.” As she stands back up, you see the full extent of her bomb-ass costume. Her dreads double as her mane, and the tan jumpsuit is backless, showing off the lioness tattoo that covers her entire back.

I’m dressed as a skeleton. My face is painted along my jawline up to my nose, and I’m in a black jumpsuit with two skeleton babies on my growing stomach. “It was amazing. I can’t tell you how many times these three were pushed into the pool,” I snicker, not bothering to try and cover up my amusement.

The twins charge down the sidewalk like chaos in human form. “Ry, look,” Kellan and Kylan shout, shifting my attention to them. “They gave us Halloween Lego sets,” Kylan exclaims as they both hold up their boxes.

“That’s amazing! Put them in your bags so you don’t lose them,” I instruct, turning to Shay and mouthing, ‘Seriously?’

She giggles. “Welcome to Edgewood.”

Rolling my eyes, we continue around the neighborhood. We’re on our last two houses on this street when five imposing forms stand, blocking the sidewalk. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know who they are.

I groan, looking over at Shay. “Are they really here?”

“Unfortunately,” she mumbles.

Wyatt is dressed as Heath Ledger’s Joker. Very fitting. All their costumes are. Sebastian is some Disney prince. Wes is the Hulk. Oh, his might be the most accurate. Lev’s Sherlock Holmes, and Owen is dressed as Tate Langdon from American Horror Story. Of course, he’s also in a skeleton costume as well.

As they walk nearer, Reign, Elias, and Fernando stand in front of Shay and me. Conner and the rest of the twins’ guards do the same.

“Fancy meeting you—” Owen’s words are cut off as Kellan and Kylan run around their guards, and I quickly follow behind them. I’m just not fast enough to stop either of them.

Kellan punches Wes in the nuts. “You guys were mean to our sister,” Kel shouts over Wes’s grunt of pain.

“She was so sad because of you, assholes,” Ky adds, elbowing Sebastian in the stomach.

“I almost forgot how protective you two are of your sister,” Sebastian gasps.

Kylan heads for Lev, preparing to kick him. “Ky, stop,” I command, and he turns.

“But they—” Kylan begins, but I hold my hand to my lips. Their guards corral them away from the Heirs.

“They aren’t worth the trouble,” I state, meeting each of their eyes before turning and walking away.

As I’m nearly back to where Shay stands smirking, I swear I hear one of them murmur, “Just a little while longer, and you’ll be ours again.”

Whirling back around to call bullshit, they’re already almost out of sight. It was your brain tricking you. They don’t want you. It would be best if you stopped having hope. I massage the space between my brows. “Let’s finish up and go home,” I say, annoyed that they ruined what was such an amazing night.

“Don’t,” Reign commands, making me look in his direction.

“What?” I ask.

Gripping my shoulder, Reign replies, “Don’t let them steal your joy. Tonight was fun. They don’t get to change that.”

“He’s right,” Shay chimes in. “Those idiots do not deserve a second thought. Not to mention, your brothers are some kickass protectors.”

“Yeah, we are,” Kellan and Kylan shout in unison, making me laugh.

Smiling, I agree, “You two most definitely are. I’d be lost without you.” Then I grab their hands. “Let’s go to the next house.”
