In just as much shock as Dylan was, Cooper inhaled a deep breath and ran her hand over her head, processing the magnitude of this discovery. She stepped in front of Dylan and obstructed her view of the room with a jaw-dropped expression. “Does Maxi know?”
“Yes. And she is not happy with me at all,” Dylan said, shaking her head. “I’m in serious trouble here, Coop. I mean, if I hadn’t been so infatuated with this woman, none of this would have happened.”
Cooper put a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “I know we disagreed about her, but no one would have suspected she was a spy. I don’t care how good a reporter someone is, no one in their right mind would subject themselves to being fucked in the ass just for a story. Come on, it makes no sense.”
“I should have sensed something was up with that. She had no experience in BDSM. I was so damn wet for that bitch I couldn’t think straight.”
Cooper pushed Dylan with a playful gloat. “And she finally admits to thinking between her legs. Let it go, man. It’s not like we’ll ever see her again. You know they’ll take care of her. They always do.”
The concern etched onto Dylan’s face as Cooper mentioned it. The horror of reality sinking in. Women didn’t quit. They vanished without a trace, and nobody ever saw or heard from them again. She knew that when she had tried to locate someone. Not having enough nerve to date someone on the job, Dylan waited until the woman quit. She went looking for her, to no avail. It pushed her heart to the floor with the realization that Ari was not safe.
With that, Dylan stepped away. “I gotta go!”
The swift turn led to a trot, which turned into a full-blown run as Dylan tore into her office, pulling out Ari’s file. She slammed her fingers against the screen as she dialed her number. No answer. Voice mail. Again. Again. Each attempt ended the same. Straight to voice mail.
“Ari! It’s Dylan. You need to call me. Now. I need to know you’re fine. Call me now!”
Dylan ended the call and slammed her phone against the desk, just to pick it up again and type out a message: Dammit, Ari! I’m sorry about everything. Just text me you’re okay. Please!
The desk shook from the force of Dylan’s fist, striking it in frustration. The assault caused the monitor to flicker, which brought her attention back to Maxi and Lady Katrina on the screen. It wasn’t like them to be arguing for so long. Dylan glanced at her watch. It was way past the time for the nightly meeting to start, and yet, the two of them were still arguing.
An idea dawned on Dylan. She opened the security footage from the night before and, to her surprise, all the footage from the arena was gone. Nothing. Maxi’s evening meeting. Gone. Ari’s punishment. Gone. The Twins’ torment. Gone. It had been recorded because she tortured herself by reviewing the footage. Alone in her office, she watched how The Twins defiled the woman she loved.
A knock on the open door startled Dylan out of the puzzled trance of staring at her computer screen. Her attention turned toward Maxi, leaning on the door and looking quite annoyed.
“You missed the meeting. That’s not like you, nor is it acceptable.”
“Was someone in here today? IT? Did they come in and run updates?” Dylan asked, ignoring her comments.
“Not to my knowledge.” After knowing Maxi for years, Dylan could tell when she lied. This was one of those times. Maxi stepped forward, extending a coaxing hand. “Now, mon petit. Come with me. I want to introduce you to our new little submissive. You’ll love her.”
“New submissive?”
There was no mention of hiring anyone, and with the loss of clients, why would Maxi hire a new woman?
A wide smile, cunning as always, appeared on Maxi’s face. “I needed someone to replace the angel we lost. She was a real moneymaker. Maybe this one will be just as delicious, and perhaps you’ll want to protect her just as much. Your dedication to these women is making me a very rich woman, Dylan. Now, join us on the floor. No need for you to be brooding over some woman. The sea is full of fish.”
Maxi extended her hand closer, not wavering in her demand that Dylan leave the office. With a long, drawn-out sigh, Dylan pushed back from the desk but slapped Maxi’s hand away.
When she did, Maxi used it to slap Dylan across the face. “You need to remember your place, Dylan Tessay. I’m sorry you have a broken heart, but you had no business mixing with the whores we employ. That is on you. I taught you better than that, not to think with your clit. There’s a tremendous difference between them and us. They’re the ones bending so the world can fuck them over. I’d hate to think all my hard work to mold you was in vain.”
Maxi stormed out of the office.
With reluctance, Dylan locked the office and made her way to the floor to meet the new staff member. Just as she rounded the corner, she skidded to a stop.
Ari? The figure. The hair. Had Ari returned, and Maxi had said everything as some twisted joke?
The woman turned around, wearing only a smile. Dylan’s heart sank after getting her hopes up for the return of her beloved.
“Meet Abigail. Darling, this is Dylan, the head of security. And Dylan, my love, I had her vetted beforehand since you have forgotten how to do so. Now, take her to the classroom and let her play out the role of a defiant schoolgirl with you.”
The request was more of a demand. With a quick glance to the right, Dylan’s eyes hit Cooper’s behind the bar. There wasn’t a way out of the situation, so Dylan grabbed Abigail’s hand and escorted her to a room decorated as a classroom with desks and a chalkboard.
At the end of the night, Dylan returned to her office and glanced at her phone. Nothing. No messages or missed calls from Ari. Cooper stepped in and closed the door behind her.
With a toss of her eyes, Dylan shrugged her off. “This is some fucked up shit, Coop. Maybe it’s me, but Maxi’s really pushing ... Pushing me away.”
Cooper sat on the edge of the desk. “I can’t believe you had to break in the new girl, especially with all the shit going on with Ari. Seriously. Maxi must be pissed at you.”
