I shake my head. “No, I couldn’t.”

She sighs. “You need to get some sleep, Dante.” She glances at the clock. “It’s only an hour until your sermon.”

I chuckle. “Don’t worry about me. I’m fine.”

“But we’re not. You realize that you murdered the sole heir of the Mancini mafia family last night?”

I’m “Yes, it’s why I’ve not been sleeping. I had to work on a plan.”

She raises a brow. “A plan?”

“Yes, I’ve got to make it look like Eric didn’t come through Fordhurst. I hacked his bank accounts and checked his texts. There’s no mention of Fordhurst, so we might be clear.”

“Might be?” Madison says. “And if we’re not, they’ll rain hellfire down on us.”

I smirk at her lack of faith in me. “I’ve sent his father a text telling him he’s chasing a lead on you in Mexico.” I walk over to the bed and show her the phone. Here’s his reply.

Fine. But hurry up. Is she really worth all this bother?

“He bought it?” she confirms.

I nod in response. “It seems like it.” I run a hand across the back of my neck. “A friend in Mexico will accept the package and take it somewhere, leaving a cell trail in Mexico. A guy I know from Billings will pick it up today and take it away from here. And then, he’ll mail it tomorrow.”

She sighs. “Seems like you’ve thought of everything.”

I smirk. “Of course. How do you think I’ve remained under the radar for four years?”

“Not being an idiot and getting your photo posted on social media.”

I laugh. “Yes, that too.”

A silence falls between us as Madison looks down at her hands, twiddling her thumbs. “But what about us? We can’t carry on like this.”

“No, we can’t.” I shift onto the bed and force her to straddle my lap, inhaling her scent of lilies and lavender. I’m gentle as I run my fingers through her hair, gathering the loose strands and tucking them tenderly behind her ear. “I’m going to announce my resignation today, and I’ve already requested that I be laicized.”

“What?” Her eyes widen. “You can’t do that.”

“What did I tell you before about the word can’t?”

She licks her lips. “But it’ll be a scandal. The town won’t like it.”

I arch a brow. “We’ll see what it’s like. If it’s bad, we’ll move somewhere else. Start fresh somewhere where no one knows us, where the past can’t follow.”

She scoffs. “I think if last night is anything to go by, the past always catches up with you.”

She has a point. I never thought Eric Mancini would catch up with me after four years. And yet he wasn’t even here for me. It’s an odd twist of fate.

I kiss her lips softly. “I love you, Madison. I want to make this work.”

Her eyes fill with unshed tears. “I love you, too.”

I smile, kissing her again. “Good, because if you didn’t, I’d find a way to make you,” I say, my voice dropping an octave.

She laughs a sound that makes my dick throb. “We best get ready for your announcement, then.”

I groan and tighten my grasp on her hips. “I wish I had time to fuck you.”

“Well, you don’t. I’m nervous,” she mutters.
