Chapter 1

“You thinkthere’s a chance I’ll get the job?”

“Honey, you’rethe best I’ve ever come across-“ Hillary shifted paperson her desk.

“Tell it to mestraight.”

“Nash Hamiltonis a – er – a difficult man.”

“I’vedealt with difficult men before.” Allison pointed out. “You’rethe head of HR, which means you hire and fire. Am I correct?”

Her friend gave her awry look. “He has his hands in every area of the company. Hebuilt the place from scratch.”

“There’sa reason he has people working for him. It’s calleddelegating.”

"Tell that tothe big man himself." Uttering a sigh, she rested her elbows onthe desk. "I don't want it to seem like I’m hiring youbecause of our friendship."

"You’rehiring me because I’m the best in the business." Allisonpointed out, trying hard not to let her nerves show. She needed thejob; her savings were dwindling, and working for a massive companylike this was even better than having her own company.

"He’sgoing to touch on the fact your company failed."

Her mouth tightened."You know why it failed."

Hillary nodded. "He’sgoing to ask you, though."

"It's none ofhis damn business." Heaving out a breath, she added. "You’reright, and it's better I get it out of the way.

My company failedbecause my ex-boyfriend ran it into the ground." She shook herhead. "That's not fair. I can’t blame Gavin for itentirely. When I put Mom in the nursing home, things went south. Withall the expenses, I had to cut corners to afford the place."

Hillary gave her asympathetic look. "Honey, I know what you’ve been through.A bit of advice?"

"That is?"

"Don't gopouring out your life story to him. This man has been through helland back, and he despises weakness. Just give him the basic facts, and that's it. Take the emotion and pain out of it."

"He’s onlyhuman. Are you telling me he has no weaknesses?"

"As far as I cantell, if he does, he keeps them well hidden. He’s tough, cynical, and doesn’t suffer fools gladly. He’s fair, andthe compensation package is better than any I’ve ever comeacross.

People who land jobshere consider themselves lucky. He pays extremely well, but heexpects you to work for it. He doesn’t tolerate shoddy work;the minute you slip up, you’re gone."

"Surely, herealizes that as humans, people make mistakes?" The pricklingalong her spine was growing stronger. The man sounded like a monster.

"He giveschances and leeway, but not much." Hillary shifted her papersagain. "I’m just giving you a heads-up."

"I appreciateit." Lifting her chin, she gave her friend a determined look. "Ineed this job, Hil; my profile speaks for itself. I’mdedicated, hardworking, and I get the job done."

"I’malready sold." She turned to the intercom when it buzzed."Laura?"

"Mr. Hamiltonwill see Ms. Simpson now. He has ten minutes to spare." Thewell-articulated voice faded away immediately.

Pushing back from thechair, Hillary grabbed the folder Allison had handed her and headedout of the room. "We do not want to keep him waiting."

She was led through awide and spacious hallway with the signature colors of ash gray andteal blue decorating the walls. A wide and spacious private elevator, minus the usual annoying elevator music, zipped its way to the upperfloors, the doors opening to another wide hallway with several doorsleading to various offices.

"I bet theassistant is a dragon." Allison murmured as they approached anopen doorway.

They saw a womandressed in a chic powder blue suit, her completely white hair sweptback into a neat chignon. Ice blue eyes flickered over Allison beforelooking at Hillary.
