“You don’twant to know. Just-“ She’d thought she had it undercontrol, but apparently that wasn’t the case. She could feelthe trembling at the base of her stomach and knew she wouldn’tbe able to keep it together. “Let’s concentrate on thework that needs to be done. David, I need a report on your socialmedia study.”

“May I saysomething before we start?” Tina, a petite red-haired girlasked, holding up a hand.

“Go ahead.”She suggested, leaning back in the chair.

“What you saidinside the conference room has merit. I monitor the various socialmedia platforms along with David and even though we know this is anhonest to goodness business, appearance is everything. Our esteemedCEO is in the shadows, people don’t know anything about him.

We have a gag orderbecause we’ve had to sign an NDA. Even if that wasn’t thecase, I don’t believe in dishing out dirt to some reporter whowants to know what goes on behind closed doors. The fact remains thatpeople need to know the man behind the company. Just saying.”

Silence reigned for afew minutes as the rest of the team processed the statement.

“Hopefully hecan be convinced to change his mind.” Allison murmured quietly.“Let’s get on, shall we?”

She spent the rest ofthe afternoon expecting to be summoned to his office or be told byhis assistant to clean out her desk. By the end of the day when shehadn’t heard anything from him, her nerves were shot to piecesand it took every ounce of control not to call his dragon of anassistant and demand to speak to him.

The summons came at aquarter to six when most people had left for the day.

Firming her lips, shepacked up her desk and took her time doing so. If this was her lastday, then she wasn’t going to pander to his whims by rushinginto his office.

The assistant wasgathering her belongings in readiness to leave when Allison gotthere.

“He’swaiting.” She was told in a chilly voice, her face frozen indispleasure. “Need I remind you he doesn’t like to bekept waiting?”

“I had somethings-“

“He’swaiting. I suggest you in immediately.”

Straightening hershoulders, she blasted the insufferable woman with one look. “Ifyou expect me to pick up my skirt, hitch it up and race in there, you’re very mistaken.”

“Ms. Simpson-“

“You may go.I’ll deal with this.” The deep voice at the office doorshad both women turning quickly.

With one last lookthat could pulverize stone, the dragon turned on her heels and left.

Lifting her head, shemet his cold gaze defiantly. “Get in here.” He told hercoldly. Without waiting for her to respond, he turned on his heelsand went back inside.

Taking a deep breath, she followed him inside.

“Close thedoor.” He clipped. He was already sitting on the edge of hisdesk, his arms folded across his broad chest.

“Sit.”

“I prefer tostand.” She told him coolly. If she was going to be fired, she’d take the news standing.

“Do you likeworking here, Ms. Simpson?” He asked her softly.

“Yes.”

“How long haveyou been here?”

“Three weeks.”

“Yet you havebeen crossing the line every step of the way. One would come to thelogical conclusion that you’re hoping to be fired.”

“I need thisjob.” She told him forcefully, refusing to give into tears. “Isuppose I should apologize-“
