"Queasy and alittle excited. Your dream is about to come true."

He was about to say'our dream' but caught himself in time.

"I’mwaiting for official confirmation. It might be stress."

"You think I’mstressed?"

"You’vebeen working hard and there’s this thing with your Dad."

"I wish youwouldn’t call him that."

"He is, though."

"I wished hewasn't." Walking over to the bench, she sat down and rubbed herhand over her chest. She was hungry but afraid to eat.

"You don't haveto see him again." He sat next to her and the overpowering urgeto draw her into his arms startled him.

"I know."Turning her head, she stared at him. Had she noticed before howtanned his skin was and that his eyes had flecks of gold when pickedup by the sun? What was she doing? Turning to look at the ducks, shetook a deep breath. “I think we should eat.”

“I’ll getthe food."

Handing him the keyfob, she sat there and stared off into the complex forest of treessurrounding the pond. Things were going to change between them.

"Here we go."He placed the bags between them. "Beef?"

"And ham. Choosethe one you want."

"I’ll takethe beef." He took it out and, as soon as he did, the queasinesscame back full force.

“Oh, shit."He watched in alarm as she raced off into the bushes. Putting awayhis sandwich, he went after her, finding her crouched over andpuking.

"Hey."Feeling a twist inside his stomach, he crouched down behind her andstroked her back. When she was done, she leaned against him weakly, her body trembling. “I think you’re right."

"I know I am."

Rising to his feet,he drew her up and turned her to face him. "Is this the firsttime you -" He gestured to the vomit.

"Yes." Sheleaned into him and closed her eyes when his arms came around her.

"We should makean appointment."

"I think weshould." She stayed where she was for a minute, inhaling theexpensive scent of his cologne. "How about tomorrow?"

"Sounds good. Iwon't say anything to Mother yet.”

“We’llkeep it to ourselves for now."

"Have you toldLydia?"

"That I’ma surrogate?" She shook her head. "Oh, no. She’sgoing to go off and I can’t deal with her theatrics right now."She lifted her head to look at him. "How do you feel?"

"Cautious.' Headmitted ruefully. “And excited at the same time. What do youwant to do now?”

“Just sit. It’sa lovely day and I want to take advantage of it."

"What about yourstomach?"

"I feel emptyand a little tired. Shall we?"
