"Iif I was, whathappened to me wouldn’t have happened. She wouldn’t havelooked at me twice. Even if something like that took place, no onewould have noticed. The entire sordidness of it made front-page newsand became fodder for some vicious gossip.

It wassensationalized, with people, men and women who call themselvesreporters, salivating over my pain and forgetting I’m an actualperson."

She’d read thearticles herself and had been angry for him. Then she’d askedherself what if it had been any other celebrity, wouldn't she havebeen entertained? The answer had been a resounding yes.

Now she was facedwith the fact her friend and the man she loved was going throughsomething so awful and she couldn’t stand it. Polishing off thesandwich, she reached for the glass of milk and settled back againstthe cushion.

"I invitedOdette to the function." He declared as he strode into hismother's office. "We should have sent her an invite, but I neverthought of it."

"You’reright." Ilene eyed her son curiously as he wandered over to thewindow. "How’s she doing?"

"Great."His tone was distracted, making her wonder what he was thinking.

"I should haveher over for dinner on Sunday."

He turned to look ather, green eyes twinkling. "We’re not in a relationship."

"She’s thewoman carrying my grandchild and we’ve never gotten along."

"That's becauseyou were determined to get on her bad side. You said she barely hadany talent."

"I was wrong, one of the few times I am." She waved a dismissive hand. "She’sdoing this for you - for us and I’m very grateful."

Dion turned back tohis contemplation of the view out the window as he wondered whatshe’d say if she knew Odette had gone from being a surrogate tohis lover. He didn’t know what to think about it himself. Hedidn’t want to hurt her.

The lovemakinghad been more than he’d ever dreamed of. He could feel hisflesh tingling and his body heating up thinking of what they’ddone. How she’d tasted on his tongue – how excited he’dbeen. He could still feel her wrapped around him, the tightness ofher-

“Dion?”

He jolted with thecolor flooding his face as he realized he’d been daydreamingabout her right here in his mother’s office and what was evenworse – he was hard.

“Yes?”

“Are youalright?”

“Yes.”Taking several deep breaths, he fought for control and willed theerection away. “I had another nightmare last night.” Hefigured that would take his mind off the dangerous path it’ddrifted on.

“Oh, darling!”She pushed away from her desk and came toward him. “Was itbad?”

“Yes.” Hemet her eyes in the one-sided glass and saw the sympathetic look onher face.

“I got throughit.”

She touched hisshoulder tentatively as if expecting him to flinch, which he’ddone in the past.

“Sometimes Ifantasize about wrapping my fingers around that woman’sthroat.”

He laughed huskily, feeling the tension easing. “You sound like Odette.” Hewasn’t aware his voice had taken an intimate tone when he spokeher name, but Ilene heard it and her eyes sharpened. “She saidthe same thing.”

“Smart woman.”She murmured lightly. “I think I’ll extend the invitationwhen I see her later.” Her intercom sounded just then. “I’mexpecting a call from the store in Milan.”

“Anything Ishould be concerned about?”

“I hope not.Stick around and we’ll find out what’s going on.”
