“Call the M&A team, see if they know what’s going on.”

“And what are you doing?”

“I’m calling Cheney. If someone is trying to take us over, his 21 per cent is the first we need to get back.”

“That’s going to cost us.”

With my hand already on the receiver, I glare at him. “You have a better suggestion?”

“No. I’ll get calling.”

* * *

One hour before the market closes, the stock has reached a staggering twenty-nine-dollar value, and I’m sweating cold.

“Did you hear from Cheney?” Evan asks.

“No.”

“He’s stalling.”

“Yep.”

“Does he really think we’re going to break thirty-five?”

I lean my elbows on the desk. “If I told you this morning we’d close the day at thirty dollars a share, what would you have told me?”

“That you were raving mad.”

I push my chair away from the desk. “Exactly. A value of thirty-five is not unimaginable now, and he has twenty-four hours after we make the initial request to get back to us.”

“So he’s only waiting for the stock to reach the premium cap—”

“And screw us over, in short.”

I stare at the stock value of 29.65, dread simmering in the pit of my stomach. This has Justin written all over it. I thought my ex was over trying to ruin or control me, but I guess he’s still smarting from the conference. He’s the only one I can think of with the power to move so much cash.

Forty minutes to go.

I follow the number’s steady rise until we break the thirty-dollar barrier one minute before closure.

Outside the office, cheers erupt as everyone takes more shots.

I stare at the monitor, feeling almost empty. Whoever has been hoarding my shares is no benefactor. This isn’t a friendly move, but a hostile takeover. Still, I need to have proof it’s Justin.

Evan’s phone rings, making me jump out of my despair.

Before picking up, he mouths to me, “It’s the bank.” Then he drops the phone on the desk and puts it on speaker.

“Evan,” a serious voice says on the other side.

“Josh, you have news for me?”

“Yes, and I’m afraid it’s not good.”

I brace myself for the worst.

“Does the name Fidelity Credit Union say anything to you?”
