“Yep.”

“But with all the shares they accumulated yesterday that could kill the stock for good.”

“I’m afraid so. You want me to place another order on it?”

I consider for a second. Did Blake know about the Fidelity Credit Union policy? Is the play intentional?

If she didn’t, her company might not recover from this. If she did and the move is deliberate, I might mess with her plans again.

I’m on the cusp of telling Robert to place the order, but I stop myself, thinking of everything Blake said yesterday. I can’t buy the stock. For both our sakes, it’s a gamble I have to make and trust she knows what she’s doing.

“No, Robert, thank you for the info, but I’ll stand by today.”

“Of course, Gabriel. Any time.”

We hang up, and I stare at the bleak red arrow next to BLH.

Of all the things she could’ve asked me. To do nothing is the worst.

Couldn’t she have asked me to jump into the fire for her? To vanquish her enemies? To crush Justin and his Class-B bank into smithereens?

But no.

She asked me to do nothing.

To sit here and twiddle my thumbs while she fights for her life.

My very definition of a personal hell.

I put my head in my hands and lean on my desk.

There has to be something I can do, a way to help her.

Come on Gabriel, think…

No, I can’t make any move without risking interfering with her strategy. So, I’ll just do the worst possible thing and sit here and do nothing. No matter that sitting still makes me literally want to crawl out of my skin. For her, I can do it.

Easier said than done.

Throughout the day, the stock continues to plummet.

Multiple times, I tell myself, if the stock goes below fifteen dollars, I’ll buy. But then it reaches the threshold, and I don’t. When it drops below eleven, I pick up the phone to call Haltman and drop it back again a million times.

By the time it reaches nine dollars, I’m losing my mind.

If her company tanks and I’ve played a part in its downfall, she’s never going to forgive me.

I stare at the monitor; the freefall has slowed, but the stock is still going down.

I drag my hands down my face.

Blake, I hope you know what you’re doing.

BLAKE

When the share price hits nine dollars, I call Cheney.
