What do you want to talk about, other than my desire to relieve you of your clothes?

I shake my head. I ignore the second half of the question and concentrate on the first.

To Gabriel

You seem quieter around Thomas, like you let him bring home all the jokes… Why?

From Gabriel

Because when I take the bait it usually ends with one of us getting a nose bleed

To Gabriel

Was your childhood happy?

From Gabriel

Very. Yours?

To Gabriel

Short

There… I’ve just given up a part of myself I’ve never shared with anyone before. Everybody always seems so proud of me for being the prodigy child. For starting my business when I was only sixteen. And I’m not saying I’d change anything in my life. Even if I could turn back time, I’d do everything exactly the same. Only sometimes, I wish I’d got to be a carefree teenager for a little longer. Go to senior prom as normal kids do instead of having to skip town to meet with potential investors. But I never talk about it with anyone. Not even Marissa. I’m afraid she wouldn’t understand. That everyone would say giving up a few school dances for a billion-dollar company is not that big of a deal. And now I’m afraid Gabriel won’t understand either.

From Gabriel

I’m sorry

He texts back instead.

From Gabriel

It must’ve been hard to grow up that fast

He understands. The walls around my heart fill with cracks.

From Gabriel

If you’re into role-playing, I could dust off my old football jacket and take you to a school dance

It’s as if he read my mind. How did he say the exact thing that would make me feel better without dismissing my pain?

To Gabriel

Should I dress like a cheerleader or a mathlete?

From Gabriel

I see my brother has been running his mouth again

But you could be dressed as Cinderella’s ugly stepsister and I wouldn’t care

To Gabriel

Aww, why would you say something so viciously sweet?
