A sound slipped past his lips, something akin to a whine, and it instantly broke whatever spell they’d both been under.

Odin froze behind him, tensing, and for a split second his fingers dug painfully into Hunter’s hips where he’d been holding him. The heat he’d been exuding with his power stopped abruptly, and then he stepped away, leaving Hunter all but glued to the wall.

If he tried to push off of it, he was afraid he’d lose sensation in his legs and fall.

Admittedly, he was also too afraid to look the Shout in the eye at the moment.

“Clean yourself,” Odin broke the silence first, his crisp tone cutting through the tension like a knife.

He left without another word, quickly gathering his clothing before leaving the bathroom, all in under a minute.

Hunter waited until he heard the bedroom door slam shut before he attempted to move.

Sure enough, he wobbled on his feet before collapsing in a heap on the shower floor.

Chapter 10:

“Get up.” Odin didn’t spare Hunter a glance, turning instead to dismiss Loni as soon as she’d wheeled in the clothing rack. The long metal bar appeared particularly empty, considering there was only the one suit hanging from it, but he’d just had it pressed and hadn’t wanted to wrinkle it.

It’d been a little over a week since he’d stepped foot in this room, and though he didn’t want to admit it was because of what had happened in the shower, there wasn’t any other excuse he could give himself. To others, of course, he’d merely stated he was busy—not an entire lie—but it’d been apparent that he was avoiding Hunter.

When no sounds of movement came from the bed where the Huntsman was sitting, Odin motioned back at him with a curl of two fingers.

“Up,” he repeated. “We don’t have all night. The party starts in an hour and a half and we’re already cutting it close.” Still nothing. With a sigh, he finally turned on his heels, catching Hunter’s stubborn gaze with his own. “The silent treatment again, really?”

“You started it,” Hunter mumbled, but it came out just loud enough for Odin to hear, and he quirked a brow.

“Did I hurt your feelings?” He eased his way over to the end of the bed with lazy strides. “Don’t tell me that you missed me, Huntsman?”

Hunter glared at him. “As if.”

Odin stared at him, wondering what was going on in his head. Did he regret the other night? He’d come, Odin was sure of it, had held himself back until Hunter’s muscles had gripped his fingers, and he’d made that adorable mewling sound—

He pulled away, inwardly cursing himself.

“Running a criminal organization must be time-consuming,” Hunter stated, the sarcasm impossible to ignore.

“Were you bored?” He took a glance around the room. While it was beautifully furnished, it wasn’t exactly the type of place meant for long periods of stay. The red silks and lace that decorated it had been designed to entice and create an almost fantasy feel, with the bed as the main focal point. There wasn’t even a TV in the room.

“Like you give a shit,” Hunter said.

“Get dressed.” Odin slid his hands into the front pockets of his maroon suit pants.

He had a black dress shirt underneath with the top three buttons undone and had forgone a tie. His hair had been combed so that only a few strands fell over his right eye, and he’d swapped out his jewelry for something a little classier than his typical look. The ruby studs winked in his ears, trailing up the outer curve of his right, with three small hoops in the same metallic red at the top. He looked good, and he knew it.

Hunter knew it, too.

His gaze kept traveling over to Odin despite his apparent attempts to keep it off him.

Odin tried not to let that affect him, resisting the urge to preen under all that attention and hold himself still. He shouldn’t give a shit what Hunter thought of him. Couldn’t. Tonight would be dangerous enough without adding worry for his captive to the list.

No, he was dragging Hunter into the belly of the beast, and Hunter deserved it. He didn’t get to be coddled. Not after what he’d done in the forest that day.

It didn’t matter that the orgasm he’d had in the bathroom less than ten feet away had been the best Odin had ever experienced. It’d been a mistake. He’d come here that night to help put his mind at ease, not make things even more complicated for himself.

He was an idiot. One who needed to regain control of this situation and fast.

“I gave you an order,” Odin said. “Don’t make me repeat myself, you won’t like the results.”
