Page 12 of Escaping Rejection

I swallowed the bite of pasta salad I’d been chewing and shrugged. “I let myself get distracted worrying about Chelsey.”

Mika, knowing my game, rolled his eyes and continued eating. The others weren’t as pleased with my answer.

“Oh, what bullshit,” Gavin sneered.

Tate cocked an eyebrow and grinned at me. “I guess it’s good you’re so caught up on Chelsey since you’ll get to be in the mating chamber with her tonight.” He glanced around at the others, and his grin grew wider. “Though, old boy here probably doesn’t know how to get a girl off, anyway. I bet that’s why Kira’s so over him and it got his panties in a bunch. Is that why you don’t like Kira anymore, Wyatt? Couldn’t find the clitoris?”

I bobbed my eyebrows and tilted my head. “Well, I found your mom’s fine. So no, I haven’t had any trouble.”

Mika had to turn sideways when the water he’d just sipped spurted out of his mouth with a laugh. Tate glared daggers at me. In all honesty, I’d forgotten all about the mating chamber. Images of the last time I was in there with Kira filled my mind. I pushed them away before I could get too worked up.

“I think Chelsey will have a good time. I can’t wait to see what kind of talents she has in the sack.” I felt gross talking about her like that, but I did my best to project a douchebag façade. “Kira was good, but I think Chelsey will be better.”

Gavin and Tate both looked pissed now. Tate called out to J.D., “Hey, bro, you better enjoy your night with Kira. Once she’s with me for good, she’ll forget all about every other alpha she’s been with.” Tate leaned forward, resting on his elbows, and stared into my eyes as I ate. “When we’re fucking? It’ll be my name she screams.”

“Fuck off,” Gavin growled. “Who the hell says she ends up with you?”

The two men bickered back and forth. I stole a glance at J.D. He’d never acted interested in Kira, but that didn’t stop my jealousy from rearing its ugly head. The mere thought of another man being intimate with Kira sent my wolf into a spitting, growling rage. Kira had probably chosen J.D. to appear impartial—and because he seemed the least likely to pull something on her. J.D. was an honorable and good shifter, and he wouldn’t do anything without consent. But I couldn’t help wondering what any man might do with someone as gorgeous as Kira in that chamber.

Almost as though my thoughts had summoned her, Kira walked in. It took all my willpower not to stare at her. I kept my eyes down and worked on my sandwich.

“Hey, guys,” Kira said. “How is everyone? J.D.?”

J.D. smiled at her. “I’m good. Thanks.”

Kira took a seat at the table with the rest of us. “Did everybody have a good morning?”

She purposely ignored me and began chatting with the others. Her scent wafted toward me, and that alone made my cock hard. My fork slid into the cheesecake, and it took all I had not to imagine our bodies slipping together the same way.

“We were actually talking about you before you came in,” Tate said.

Kira rested her chin on her hand and grinned at him. “Really? Do tell.” She winked. “Was it something naughty?”

My eyes were halfway through rolling when I caught myself. The sexy, flirty act must have been exhausting, but she played it up well.

“Yeah, a little. You know, Kira, there’s still time for you to change your mind about who to take into the mating chamber.”

She arched an eyebrow. “Oh? Think you’d do better, do you?”

“I’ve never had a partner who wasn’t satisfied.” Tate’s cockiness made my skin crawl. “I’d do things to you that you never imagined. You’ll be calling out to the gods before we’re even halfway done.”

“Would you shut the hell up?” Abel snapped.

Thank fuck he’d said it first because I’d been about half a second from shoving my fork into Tate’s throat.

Kira remained the perfect and composed actress. She giggled seductively. “Oh, I’m sure you know what you’re doing, Tate. I’m looking forward to spending some time with J.D., though. He’s really an amazing guy.”

From her tone and inflection, I could tell the compliment was genuine. J.D. looked up from his food and smiled. He still looked down, but her praise was cheering him up.

“I think you’re great, too, Kira.” He sighed and glanced around. “All I really want is for you to be happy. I wanteveryonehere to be happy. We all deserve a happy ending, right?”

“Aw, so sweet. No wonder the fans love you, J.D.,” Von Thornton said as he strode into the room.

J.D.’s eyes clouded over and he went back to staring at his food.

Von put a hand on J.D.’s shoulder. “Such a loveable alpha. Our social media accounts show you’re the favorite among the contestants.”

J.D. looked uncomfortable under the vampire’s gaze. He probably wanted to swat the other man’s hand off his shoulder.
