Page 40 of Escaping Rejection

Great, now I had two people who could be the damn changeling. My plan wasn’t going like I wanted. Instead of eliminating targets, I was adding to them.

Gavin and Kira were still dancing. Fear welled inside me. It had to be Gavin. He was the only option left. I’d spoken to Kira, and while I hadn’t asked her any questions, I was certain she wasn’t the changeling.

This was the plan, then. Use Gavin to kill Kira. That must be what Von and the showrunners wanted.

Before I sprinted to the dance floor to tear the two of them apart, the song ended, and Gavin walked Kira to the one of the cocktail tables. Walking over to join them, I decided to make absolutely sure I was right. We only had two or three minutes left at best.

“Gavin?”

“Wyatt, I don’t remember either of us asking you to interrupt. I’m trying to have a conversation with Kira.”

Ignoring him, I pushed forward with my questions. “What color suit did you wear to Kira and Jayson’s mating ceremony?”

“Isaid, I didn’t ask you to come over here. If you’re trying to get Kira alone again, it’s not going to happen. I know she’s who she’s supposed to be. We’re fated to be together. You think I wouldn’t know the real Kira? Fuck off.”

I balled my hands into fists, about to lay him out, but Kira gave me a warning shake of the head. She mouthed,It’s not him. That brought me up short. Not him? Shit.

Spinning away from them, I checked the others again. Had I fucked up? Did the changeling know more than I’d thought? I didn’t see how it could be possible, but if it wasn’t Gavin, then who?

“That dude isn’t acting right,” Abel said, pointing at Tate. “Has anyone else noticed it yet?”

“Yeah, well, I don’t like the way Mika’s over by himself in the corner, watching us all,” J.D. pointed out.

Anxiety filled the room as the time ticked closer to zero. Everyone grew warier by the second. We had to figure this out soon.

A hand shoved me from behind. I turned to find Gavin pointing at me. “You’re acting suspicious as fuck. I’ve seen you walking around talking to everyone. That’s weird.”

Everyone besides Mika gave me a wide berth. Their paranoia had them taking Gavin’s words to heart.

“Gavin?” Kira said, looking at him with renewed interest and confusion. “Leave him alone. It’s fine. It isn’t Wyatt.”

“Bullshit,” Gavin said, shoving me again. “It has to be him.”

I backed away, holding my hands up. “I guess we’ll find out soon.”

“Right,” Gavin grunted. “I’m keeping my eyes on you. Got it?”

“Got it.”

The other alpha moved back to the cocktail table and downed a glass of champagne in one gulp. I pulled Kira aside.

“I thought you said it wasn’t him,” I whispered.

“I didn’t think it was. He said some stuff while we were dancing that made me sure, but now? I don’t know.” She scanned the crowd as small arguments and accusations flew back and forth.

“What’s your inner wolf saying? Mine’s too freaked out from having our shifter senses blocked to help me make a read.”

“Same,” Kira muttered, still glancing around. “I don’t have a good connection to her, anyway. This is making it worse. I’m starting to think the changeling is Gavin, though. Did you see the way he freaked out on you?”

A tremble of unease shot through me, and hot, nervous sweat trickled down my back. “Kira, where did I find you that day twelve years ago?” The question burst out of me before I even realized I was going to ask it.

“Wyatt, focus, we don’t have time for this. We both know where you found me that day. What we need to worry about is which of these people is about to flip out and try to kill us.”

Grabbing her arm, I spun her roughly to face me. “Tell me, right now, where I found you and what happened. The night of your first shift. Tell me right fucking now.”

Kira’s first shift was probably the single most important moment of her entire life. The trauma, pain, and horror were as deeply ingrained in her as her parents’ faces. If she didn’t respond to my question, then I’d have my answer.

Kira glared at me and shoved her finger into my chest. “I don’t feel like walking down memory lane when Gavin is about to change into some monster and rip someone apart.”
