Page 48 of Escaping Rejection

She pressed so close that her scent overpowered me, making me dizzy with desire. I wanted her again already, wanted to tear her robe off and devour her. I pushed closer to kiss her, but a knock at the door stopped me.

I growled in frustration. “The universe hates us. That’s the only thing that makes any sense. It’s got it in for us.”

With a laugh, Kira gently moved my hand away and went to the door to see which asshole had interrupted what was about to be a really great time. I followed Kira to the foyer. If it was Gavin again, I wanted to make sure he had to look at me while he bugged Kira. But it wasn’t Gavin at the door.

It was Chelsey. The woman gaped when she saw me behind Kira. Both of us were in robes and obviously naked beneath them. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what we’d been doing.

“Crap,” she said. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to, uh, interrupt.”

“No, no, no. You didn’t,” Kira said. “It’s fine. What’s the matter?”

“Let me grab my stuff,” I said. I could tell by the way Chelsey eyeballed me that she didn’t want to say whatever she’d come to say with me around. “I need to head out, anyway.”

Kira escorted Chelsey into the room while I quickly put my clothes back on in the bathroom. When I came out, Kira was pouring Chelsey a glass of wine.

“See you later,” I said as I walked toward the door.

“See you,” Kira said. Chelsey gave me an awkward smile.

The whole walk back to the alpha den, I thought about how best to get under Von’s skin. I wanted something that would make him blow up, preferably during one of the live broadcasts. Then he wouldn’t have a chance to edit it out.

When I stepped into the den, I saw that several guys had turned in early and were already fast asleep. The ballroom fiasco had drained everyone. The sun wasn’t even all the way down yet.

Mika was still awake. Seeing me, he stood and joined me at the door. “Can I have a word real quick?”

“Sure,” I said. “What’s up?”

He pointed toward the hallway. “Out here,” he whispered. “Most of them are asleep, but you never know who’s listening.”

Mika led me into the hall and down the corridor before ducking into what looked like a small decorative office.

“Is Kira okay?” Mika asked.

“She is. I checked on her as soon as I left the ballroom.”

“Good. I was worried about her as soon as I realized she’d been replaced.” He chewed on the inside of his cheek for a second and glanced back out the door to see if anyone was lurking in the hall. “You said you might have a plan for getting people off the show. Is that the truth? Is it really possible?”

Time to give him the whole story. “There is a chance. Zoe, Kira’s friend, didn’t die out there. A guy named Crew saved her, and he has some kind of hidden enclave or camp called Haven where others are living. We’re waiting to get word from Zoe to plan the fake eliminations in detail, but in short, we’ll make Von and everyone else think someone has been knocked off the show, but in reality, they go into hiding at this Haven place. There’s more to it, but that’s basically the gist.”

Mika nodded along as I spoke. When I finished, he said, “Well, if you’re looking for a guinea pig to be the first to sneak off, I’m your guy. I volunteer.”

I gave him an assuring nod. “I think that can be arranged.”

“Seriously?” He looked as though he hadn’t expected that answer.

“Someone has to be first, and you’re more ready than anyone else. Why not?”

“Damn. All right, then. Do you guys have a timeline?”

I shook my head. “Not yet. Like I said, we need to get in contact with Zoe again. Once we get some info, then we’ll move. We’re gonna try to do it soon, though. These tasks are getting fucking ridiculous.”

Mika looked more excited than I’d ever seen him, like he had a mission or a goal. Maybe it was the first time he’d had any hope since finding out his father was fucking his fated mate behind his back. Whatever it was, I liked seeing that glimmer of life in his eyes.

“Let’s get back in there. We need to get some rest,” I said.

“Yeah. You’re right about that.”

As we headed back, my mind drifted to my unofficial pack and Kolton. Other than Kira, Mika was the closest thing I had to a friend on the island. The people I’d left behind were like a dream. We were so isolated on this stupid island, it was as if nothing else existed but this place.
