Page 58 of Escaping Rejection

Gavin glanced at me, and I knew what he’d say before he even opened his mouth. “The Eleventh Pack.”

Even Abel and J.D. looked shocked at his answer. It was one thing for a shifter like Wyatt, who’d left his own pack, not to pick the one he’d been born in. As taboo as that was, it still kind of made sense. But Gavin was the brother of the Ninth Pack’s alpha. He was as far up the hierarchy as anyone. For him to choose another pack was startling.

Tate snorted with disgust. “Bro, you have to get your nose out of Kira’s asshole. Are you really gonna disrespect your own pack to try and get some pussy?”

“Tate!” Von barked. “Language! We’re live.”

I almost laughed. Bloody, violent deaths and sex were fine, but the word “pussy” wasn’t? What kind of alternate reality was I living in?

Gavin looked as equally unconcerned as Wyatt. “What can I say? I’ve lived in the Ninth Pack. I know how crappy it is. I also know Kira and I are destined to be together. She’s the best person I know. To me, that means the pack she came from has to be the best pack.”

Tate only rolled his eyes. Abel looked like he wanted to say something, but kept his mouth shut. Mika had answered with his own pack as well, but when he said it, I could tell he was just parroting what the audience wanted to hear. I wished Wyatt and Gavin had done the same.

“Next question,” Von said. “We’ll start with J.D. Who is the one contestant you’d bring back if you could?”

“Oh, that’s easy,” J.D. said. “I’m sad about all the guys who got eliminated, but I really miss Leif. I’d take on anything in that jungle if it meant hanging with that dude one more time.”

Even from across the room, I could see the wistfulness in J.D.’s eyes. It was sweet that he wanted Leif back, and it made my heart hurt for him. How would I have felt if I only admitted my feelings for Wyatt to myself after he was gone, like J.D. had with Leif? The whole thing made me sad, and I promised myself I’d make sure those two were reunited.

The question went around the room, and pretty much everyone agreed on Leif. Von got to me, and all I could do was nod. “Yeah. Like J.D. said, every elimination was rough, but if I’m being selfish, I’d bring back Leif.”

“My, my,” Von said. “Looks like Leif had a big impact on everyone. Next question—and this is a doozy—comes from a human fan. Would any of you ever date a non-shifter?”

Oof, what a loaded question. Many shifter packs, notably wolf-shifter packs, were old-school about that. Still, I was curious about what the others would say.

Von pointed at Gavin. “You first, Mr. Fell.”

He shook his head quickly. “Absolutely not. No chance.”

“Same,” Tate said.

“Interesting,” Von said, then nodded to Abel and Chelsey.

“I don’t think so, no,” Abel said.

“I don’t have anything against non-shifters,” Chelsey said hesitantly. “I have friends who aren’t shifters, but no, I don’t think I could.”

“Kira? What do you say?” Von asked.

For a moment, I imagined Wyatt being a human or a fae, or even something more bizarre, and I realized it didn’t matter. My feelings wouldn’t change. That was an interesting revelation, as I’d always considered myself traditional. A lot of my old thoughts and beliefs were changing. Lots of things had changed for me on this show.

“Um, I think I would,” I said.

“Kira?” Gavin gasped.

“Why am I not surprised?” Tate muttered in disgust.

I stared back at Gavin and cocked an eyebrow at him. “What? It’s a little bigoted to say you’d never date someone just because of how they were born, right? Almost as bigoted as saying you wouldn’t date or mate with someone in a lower pack.”

He couldn’t keep eye contact with me. He knew I was right, and it shamed him that his own family had rejected me for it. The whole thing with Wyatt was nothing but pretense. Jayson had wanted out, and his father had wanted him togetout. They’d used that accident with the lion shifter to get rid of me, the poor little woman from a lesser pack.

Chelsey stared at the floor, absorbing my words. From the look on her face, she, too, was reconsidering her worldview. She’d had almost the same thing happen to her.

“Wyatt?” Von prompted.

He leaned back in his seat, looking as cool as I’d ever seen him look. “I’ve dated people who weren’t shifters. Short relationships, but it happened. I don’t see a problem with it. You love who you love, right?”

I’d heard a bit about Wyatt’s romantic exploits over the years, so his answer came as no surprise to me. In fact, to my shame, I’d made fun of him when he’d dated a human woman a few years before. Remembering that made me feel a little dirty.
