Page 71 of Escaping Rejection

Completely ignoring him, Kira walked up to me and took my hand. “I need to talk to you.” She glanced at Gavin. “Alone.”

Kira tugged at my hand and pulled me down the hall, but we didn’t make it far before Gavin tried one more time.

“Wait,” he said, looking desperate and frustrated. “Kira, I know you’re mad, but you have to play the game the right way. Playing is the only way to win. Can’t you see that?”

Kira released my hand and whirled on Gavin. The other man jerked back, and I again had to bite my lip to stop myself from laughing.

She jabbed a finger into Gavin’s chest. “I’d rather break the entire game than play the stupid thing. I don’t enjoy sadistic games. Let me make this crystal clear once and for all: I have no intention of being at your side, Gavin. I know you have these feelings inside that you think are for me, and I’m sorry, but they aren’t in me. You need to get over it.” Before he could respond, she turned back and grabbed me again, hurtling down the hall, leaving Gavin to stand and stare at us as we left.

“That was impressive,” I whispered.

“Fucking Fell boys. If they aren’t aloof and soulless assholes, they’re clingy, lovesick assholes,” she muttered.

We’d left him far behind when Kira finally looked up at me and saw the smile on my face.

“What exactly is funny about all this?” she demanded.

The grin vanished and I apologized. “Sorry, sir. No smiling, sir. I’ve been a very bad boy, sir.”

She swatted at my chest. “There’s nothing funny about this, Wyatt.”

“I know,” I admitted. “I just like seeing that temper come out, especially when it’s not aimed at me. It’s kinda hot, actually. Your passion has always turned me on. I’ve always tried to ignore it or act like it annoyed me, but…” I slid a hand up her back. “No need anymore.”

She blinked, caught off-guard by my statement. “I don’t, uh, I don’t—”

“Yeah, I know,” I said, rolling my eyes. “Kira Durst doesn’t do well talking about feelings.”

“Can we not do this right now? Sexy talk later. I haveotherthings to say.”

She glanced around before dragging me into the nearest room. It was small for the mansion and appeared to be some sort of wine cellar. Three walls held wine bottles encased behind glass doors. In the middle of the room, a huge sofa sat in front of a wooden table, probably for wine tastings or something.

“What’s up?”

“I heard from Zoe,” she hissed.

“What? When?”

“I went to see Chelsey after the challenge. When I went back to my room, Mr. Rainbow Sprinkle Butt was waiting for me on my desk—”

“Hang on,” I said, holding up a hand. “Whowas waiting in your room?”

“Rainbow Sprinkle Butt. He’s a bird, follow along. Anyway, he had a message on his leg. A letter from Zoe.”

I knew this was what we’d been waiting for—confirmation that Mika had indeed been swept away by the fae and her new allies, or that he’d been murdered by a monster in the jungle.

I swallowed hard, terrified to hear the answer. “And?”

Kira smiled, hints of tears glistening in her eyes. “He made it. He’s there. Mika’s alive in Haven.”

A shuddering sigh left my chest at the news. “Can I see the note?”

Kira shook her head and showed me the black smudges on her fingers. “It burst into flames as I read the last word. It’s Zoe’s way of keeping everything a secret. Nothing but ashes now.”

“Okay, that’s fine. What did she say? Is he all right?”

“She said he’s still his same old self. I think the exact terminology she used was ‘His Broodiness.’ It seems like he’s safe and sound otherwise.”

It had been a long time since I’d experienced such relief. Mika had been through more shit than pretty much anyone else on the show. Hell, he’d been through more shit than me. My fated mate had been a controlling monster, but at least my father hadn’t been fucking her behind my back. My father had loved me in his own way. It wasn’t a tender or close love, but he’d never have done what Mika’s father did. When I rejected Serenity and left the pack, I knew it had hurt him. His position in the pack had made it impossible for him to do more than give me a hug and a pat on the back as I departed.
