The others seemed equally happy to see the other alpha alive again. While the reunion was quick, I noticed something strange. Rather than keeping eye contact with any of us, his eyes continued to slide away. To Zoe.
I looked at my friend and raised an eyebrow. What the hell?
Zoe saw my face and rolled her eyes. “Mister Broody? His Broodiness? Broodypants McSadface? I think he’s finally starting to get into the swing of things here,” she whispered.
Was Zoe really that blind to the way Mika was checking her out? Mika could be difficult, but I wondered what he’d been like before his father and mate ripped his life apart. If he could get out of his head, he could still try to have a happy life.
“I can’t wait to hear about what happened at the mansion,” Zoe said.
“Yeah,” Eli said. “But let’s wait until we’re all together. We need to make sure Crew hears this, too.”
Chelsey’s face went deathly white and she stumbled backward. J.D. had to catch her to keep her from falling.
“Whoa, what’s wrong?” I asked her.
Once she’d steadied herself, Chelsey leaned toward Eli. “Wha… what did you say? Repeat that name, please.”
Eli looked confused. “Um, you mean Crew?”
Chelsey nodded quickly. “Is that a first name or a last name?”
Eli glanced behind us and smiled. “You can ask him yourself. He’s right there.”
Chelsey spun around, her eyes wild. There came a sharp intake of breath behind me. Once I turned around, I found Crew staring at Chelsey like she was the first light he’d seen in years. Like she was a river, and he was a man dying of thirst. His jaw moved, but no words came out, like he couldn’t find the words to speak.
Chelsey had a similar look on her face. “Ben?”
My eyes widened. Ben? Her fated mate who’d rejected her two years ago? My head snapped back and forth between her and Crew. This was the same guy who’d broken her heart to pieces?
I should have hated the asshole for what he’d done to Chelsey, but when I looked into Crew’s face, one thing was certain: he was still in love with her. There was no hiding that look. It was how Wyatt looked at me, and probably how I looked at him, too.

Wyatt
Crew stared at Chelsey, Chelsey stared at Crew, and I stood there like a dumbass, looking back and forth at them like I was watching a tennis match. Was this really happening?
“Hang on,” J.D. said. “You two know each other?”
Whatever spell Chelsey had been under shattered. She blinked and sputtered. “Uh, I think… well… I don’t know him anymore. Maybe once—”
“Yes, we know each other,” Crew said, his voice more assured than Chelsey’s.
Things grew ever more awkward as they continued to gaze into the other’s eyes. If everyone else felt like me right now, then we all felt like intruders in something that should have been happening in private. Chelsey’s face grew more anguished while Crew kept staring at her in stunned silence. He looked like the happier of the two for some reason, yet from what I remembered of Chelsey’s story,he’drejectedher.Why the hell he’d be happy to see her was beyond me.
Zoe stepped forward, giving Crew and Chelsey a weird look before speaking. “Okay, this has been fun, but can we maybe go to the meeting hall? Once we’re there, you two can keep staring holes through each other while we figure out what happened at the mansion.”
Crew, still unable to take his eyes off Chelsey, nodded. “Yeah. Okay.” Finally, he shook his head, trying to clear his thoughts. He grabbed a passing person. “Can you take these two to our healer?” He gestured at J.D. and Gavin.
The man glanced at the two alphas and stepped forward. “Sure thing, boss.”
“Don’t call me boss, Daven. You know I hate that,” Crew said with a smile. He was calm and assured with the people here, and I was already starting to warm up to him.
“Oh, shit. Sorry, I forgot. My fault, boss.”
Crew rolled his eyes. “Anyway, make sure they’re taken care of once they’re with the healer. Get them water, food, whatever they need.”
“I’m on it,” Daven said. He turned to J.D. and Gavin. “If you two want to follow me?”
