Her words, violent as they were, sent a burst of hope through me. Maybe we didn’t need to worry about other people. Maybe…my thoughts trailed off as a new and exciting possibility flooded into my mind.

Reaching over, I took Kira’s hand, tugging her closer until I could wrap my arms around her. “Kira, what if there is no one else out there? What if we’re meant for each other?”

She pulled her head back, staring at me in surprise. “Do you think so? The odds of that are—”

“I don’t give a shit about odds. All I know is how I feel about you. There’s nowayanyone could make me as happy as you do. When I’m with you, it feels like I’m finally home.”

Kira smiled hopefully and kissed me. That feeling ofhomeswept over me again as the warmth of her lips and tongue met mine. Maybe, just maybe, despite the odds, we would end up together and happy once all this was over.

Our moment of bliss was shattered when the ground beneath us shook in a violent tremor. Kira jerked back from me as shouts of surprise echoed throughout Haven.

“Wyatt?”

“I don’t know,” I said, answering her unspoken question.

A fae woman leapt to her feet. “This is nature magic. Fae magic.”

“Simon,” I muttered.

Kira’s eyes went wide with shock and horror. “Has he found us?”

The walls and ceiling began shuddering violently, and dirt and dust rained down on us.

The same fae woman ran for the door. “We’re under attack. They’re trying to bring the place down. Everyone out. Now!”

“Run!” Crew screamed. “Run! Anyone with magic, hold the walls up until we evacuate.”

The call for magic users went out, shouted down the corridors. A wiccan joined the fae woman at the wall. The fae put her hand to the wall and scrunched up her face in exertion as she pushed her energy into the structure. The wiccan raised her hands high overhead and muttered counter spells. The struggle on their faces told me they were fighting against something more powerful than them.

Crew grabbed Chelsey’s hand, pulling on her to follow him. “Eli! Evacuate. Evacuate.” His voice echoed back to us as he rushed down the corridor.

“Leif!” Kira gasped, tugging on my shirt. “We have to save him.”

“What about everyone else?” I asked.

“No one else is locked in a cage!”

Chaos had enveloped Haven. Shouts and screams and cries of terror mingled with the dull, rumbling roar of the magic that threatened to bury us all under a mountain of dirt and rock. A steady rain of dirt fell everywhere. As we ran, multiple magic wielders stood in various areas, working together to keep Haven from crumbling apart. They strained and groaned under the pressure of the attack.

There were only minutes left. We had to hurry.

In the enclosure and medical areas, we found Eli shouting at the healers to either run for the exit or help hold the structure up.

“Eli, help us with Leif!” Kira called out.

“What?” Eli’s angelic face was smeared with dirt.

“Leif! Can you knock him out again so he’s safe to transport?”

Eli closed her eyes, fighting back frustration, then nodded. “Let’s hurry.”

We found Leif huddled in the corner of his cell in human form, rocking back and forth. With no one here to fight back against the attack, his cell had already begun to fill with dirt, the ceiling caving in and threatening to crush him.

Unlocking the door, Eli thrust her hand out in front of her. Leif, terrified by what was happening and still out of his mind, leapt up and rushed toward her. Eli put her hand to his forehead, and Leif’s eyes rolled back as he passed out.

“There,” Eli said. “Get him the hell out of here. I have to check everywhere else.” She was already running out the door.

I hefted Leif up and flung him over my shoulder. “Move!” I shouted, pushing Kira toward the door.
