Page 79 of His Rejected Mate

“You won’t have to,” I said. “He’ll only make me cry with laughter. Or from disgust at his terrible jokes.”

“You guys are funny. Really freaking funny,” Wyatt said.

“This has been fun,” Kolton said. “Family drama and all that, but I’m gonna head out to check on the border patrols.”

“Say hi to Eli for us,” Wyatt said with a smirk.

Kolton blushed, and he glared at us. “Don’t be assholes.”

He shifted and sprinted into the forest.

“We should get going,” Wyatt said.

“I know, but I want to check in on Leif and Abel before we get too tied up with that. I’ve been thinking about them.”

“They were taken to the Eleventh Pack clinic about a mile up the road from here. It’s the closest we have to a hospital right now since most cities and towns are blocked off. Let’s go.”

We arrived at the clinic to find Leif, Abel, and, unsurprisingly, J.D. The two unhealthy alphas were in beds in the same room. J.D. sat on a stool by Leif’s bed.

Leif was the first to notice us. “Hey, guys,” he said, and I was happy to see how good he looked.

“Hi. How are you feeling?” I asked.

“They say I’m stable,” Leif said. “I haven’t had any issues since getting here, which I guess is a good sign I don’t want to hurt anyone by accident.”

“You won’t. You’re getting better,” J.D. said.

Abel looked even better than Leif. The color had returned to his face, and he didn’t look as lethargic anymore.

“How about you?” Wyatt asked Abel. “Feeling better?”

Abel nodded and fingered his hospital gown. “Can’t tell much from my outfit, though. Looks like I’m about to get a liver transplant or something.”

J.D. gasped in surprise. When I looked over, he was staring at me.

“What? What’s wrong?” I asked.

He then pointed at my neck, then gasped again and pointed at Wyatt’s neck. “Holy shit, you guys. Really? For really real?”

“Uh, yeah,” Wyatt said. “For really real.”

J.D. leaped from his chair and embraced us both. “I’ve been, like, the number-one Kwyatt fan since the beginning,” he gushed. Can you guys sign my shirt or something?”

“That’s great, guys,” Abel said with a weak smile.

“I’m happy for you two,” Leif added.

“Do you think there’s any way to get back to our packs?” Abel asked.

“I’m not sure,” I said. “Travel between territories is a little dangerous right now. What’s up? Eleventh Pack not hospitable enough for you?” I joked.

“It’s not that.” He looked at our claiming marks again. “It’s just that, now that we know the fated connections were all wrong, I’ve been thinking.”

“About?” I asked, eyebrows raised.

“When I was rejected, it sort of broke my heart. Almost ruined me, but that was only because it was set up through the blood test. I assumed, as everyone did, that these tests were blessed by Heline and set in stone.” Abel licked his lips and looked away.

A small smile tugged at my lips. “There’s someone you want to see, isn’t there?”
