I winced slightly. “They’re a… client of mine.” I knew using the truth was always the best approach when lying. It made lies easier and more believable, and I was generally terrible at lying. Tina could always tell when I was, so I desperately prayed they wouldn’t be able to sense that.

“Oh, fun. What is it that you do? I’m always intrigued by the services that can be provided for our kind.”

Our kind.

I clenched my teeth together, preventing them from chattering with fear.

“Are you a uh-succubusas well?” The words sounded ridiculous to say, but they seemed to resonate with her, which only made the reality of this all the more real.

She laughed briefly, not as if what I said was absurd. “I’m a mix. The child of a half-bred succubus and vampire. Though, I might as well tell people a vampire. There are hardly any true succubus in the States anymore. Let alone any that have any abilities. And you dearest? What are you?”

Her husband nudged her softly. “You’re hounding the poor girl, Sophie.” His gaze turned toward me, eyes blazing red, which I hadn’t noticed until now, making it more apparent that the existence of vampires also seemed to be real.

What was next?Werewolves? The thought sent my stomach plummeting to my knees. I struggled to swallow down the rising nausea.

“Our names are Sophie and Trevor. I apologize for my wife’s rudeness. We’re not used to newcomers, as you can see.” His eyes were kind despite being the color of blood, glimmering in the bright chandelier lighting.

“Oh, you’re right, my love.” She laughed rather incessantly. Her laugh was horrid and loud, with a Brooklyn accent that almost sounded raspy. The smell of smoke funneled out of her mouth as if she had just smoked an entire pack herself.

“It’s okay. It was nice meeting both of you. But if you don’t mind, I have some matters to attend to.” I gestured toward the front door. I was almost there. The couple shifted to the side, creating an opening like Moses parting the seas.

Dustin came frantically running up the hall as if on cue, calling my name in distress. I was slightly surprised to see how concerned he seemed at my disappearance. I hadn’t expected him to come storming after me at the realization that I had run for it. In all honesty, I thought he would have expected me to run.

I mean, anysaneperson would have.

“Freya, Darling.” His eyes widened as he saw me with Sophie and Trevor. I watched his brow lift, unsure whether to be impressed or concerned. “Hello, Soph. Nice to see you.”

I mentally noted his lack of acknowledgment toward Trevor but stood there speechless. I could still run, right? Or did succubus have inhuman speed, too?

“You have such lovely company. I’m curious as to what she is? She’s stunning, Dustin. What a great find.” Sophie regarded.

He awkwardly laughed. “Sheis not supposed to be up this way, are you?” His silver eyes seemed to shoot daggers as they aggressively shifted toward me.

He let his arm sashay around my waist, pulling me in slightly. His hand pressed into my bare skin that had shown through as my shirt untucked itself from all the running around, and just this simple touch had me begging for more. I had to bite my tongue to keep myself from saying something I would regret, like begging him to touch me more.

His charms had to have been working on me,right? That must have been what this was. It had to be.

“See, I knew she was human.” Sophie’s eyes brightened as she looked at me, her hand smacking Trevor’s as if she had known all along. “I wasn’t sure. She seemed pretty levelheaded for a human, especially since she knew what you were.” Sophie redirected herself to Dustin.

I could sense his nervousness about this encounter, a palpable tension in the air. He seemed uneasy, perhaps unsure of how I would react. His fingers gently pinched my side as if to emphasize his eerie warning, as if I needed another reminder of the impending consequences should I not comply.

“To be madly in love with him,” as he had said before.

I looked up at him, lifting my chin to the ceiling, and let my eyes dance across his face, taking in every feature from this close. His brows were bushy, slanting downward a little. The hair on his face was roughly shaven, faded like a shadow surrounding his lips that were dangerously close to mine once more. Just looking at them made my heartbeat echo in my head. It made my mind imagine the possibility of kissing him here and now.Finally.

His arms were still wrapped around me, and knowing whatI had to do, I let my arms grab him back, sashaying around his toned waistline that tensed at my touch.

Was he feeling this attraction, too? Or was he messing with me for sport?

At first, the closeness felt unfamiliar, but it felt more natural as I gazed up at him. I let my right hand gently move up his chest, feeling his lungs rise and fall. I let my fingers weave in between his buttons, poking at the hairs that laid under his shirt. And when his eyes detached from Sophie and slid downward to look at me, I felt the air in my lungs still.

It was only a sudden glance. I’m sure it was a quick look to see what I was doing, but it made my heart stop. It made me question things I didn’t need to be questioning. It made me itch in the most satisfying way possible. Something about the look on his face sent shock waves down my body, centering on my sex, almost like it was throbbing for him as if a single glance could make me fold.

Goddamn,these Ellisario charms…

“Well, thank you for occupying her in my stead.” He offered a smile to the two strangers as they casually strolled down the hallway. It wasn’t until they reached their room a few doors down that Dustin let his eyes drift back down to me.

“What were you thinking?” He was seething but still held me, and I wasn’t trying to pull away either. “If that was anyone else,” He started but then stopped, his free hand washing over his face as his head tilted back in anger. “You can’t justwanderaround here. It’s not safe.”
