“Nothing.” I groaned, brushing her off.

I made sure that Freya was wedged between Oliver and me, away from anyone who would try to converse with any one of us for the evening. And more importantly, away from anyone willing to kill or hurt her to get attention from me.

She appeared utterly entranced, her gaze fixated upward on the Sirens in sheer amazement. I watched as her eyes wandered around the club, absorbing every detail. The widest sparkle in her eyes came, mostly, from the vampires, even though I doubted she knew exactly what they were.

The vampire Lords from each neighboring hive usually occupied the majority of the club’s VIP booths, while some lesser demons found their places scattered throughout. Sadly, as the succubus population dwindled over the years, the club evolved into a hub for various other demon species that populated the city, especially the vampires.

Vampires were like cockroaches to the supernatural - spawning new turns and crawling around this city like a disease. Unyielding almost. You couldn’t turn down a single cobblestone road without one lurking somewhere nearby.

“So, what are all these people?” She said as she frantically searched the club for answers.

Oliver snorted at her. “That’s a pretty vague question. You mean what kind of supernatural?”

She nodded in response.

Oliver continued listing the different vampire hives, the neon lights casting an ethereal glow around us. I allowed himto proceed, letting my mind drift into the vibrant crowd until I noticed Fiona stumbling our way.

Her staggered walk towards us was a clear giveaway that Fiona was inebriated. Vampires, it seemed, had a penchant for drowning their sorrows in both blood and booze.

“Dustin Ellisario. Twice in two days.” She hiccupped, her eyes wandering to Freya naturally. “And who is this lovely pound of meat?” Her long, pointed nails flicked at Freya.

Fiona’s eyes ignited in a fiery red, and I felt Freya’s body instinctively stiffen. Quickly, I reached out, firmly clasping her hand in mine.

Freya wasmineto play with, not hers. And I was not about to let Fiona assume she was just another human that I might take to bed. Even though I did have full intentions of fucking her. At some point, when she finally caves into me.

I was so close, too.

I could feel how badly she wanted me, and oddly enough, the chase was more intoxicating than I would have imagined. The only concerning thing that still wracked my brain was how it was possible for me to feel her other emotions. The ones that succubus couldn’t feel.

It was making me feel oddly human, flooding me with emotions I didn’t even know I was capable of feeling. Like concern for her, or sympathetic toward the idea that she was being thrown into my world so suddenly.

“I-I’m Freya.” She extended her hand. I had half a mind to swat it down, but Fiona kindly grabbed it, giving her a light kiss on the back of her palm. At least Fiona was only a vampire. There was no chance I’d let a succubus even come close to touching her.

“Fiona.” She winked. “Are you here for business orpleasure?” Her eyes lit up at the final word.

Freya practically whipped her hand back into her chest at that. “Uh.” She stammered.

“That’s none of your business, Fiona.” I Interrupted, unamused.

Fiona tilted Freya’s chin upward with a finger and deliberately scratched it, leaving a trail of blood. She licked it almost instantly, a wicked grin spreading across her face. “You taste… divine,” she remarked with unsettling satisfaction.

“You’re drunk, Fiona,” I growled, pushing her backward with my index finger.

“I suppose.” She stumbled momentarily, catching herself as her eyes landed on Freya again. “Well, don’t get your hopes up. He’ll be sniffing out another prey soon enough. You’re nothing special, no matter what sweet words he tries whispering into your ear. Trust me.”

I was almost scared to look at Freya. It’s not like what she was saying was entirely wrong. In fact, that had been my intention from the start, but hearing it out loud like that didn’t sit well with me.

“Not like it matters, your little pet probably is too charmed to understand anything I’m saying.” Fiona’s eyes darted around the table, settling on Sasha. “And who areyou?”

Sasha’s lips curled into a smile as she fluffed up her skirt. “Wouldn’t you like to know.”

“I would.” Fiona winked at her and then tried making eye contact with me. Did she think hitting on my sister would make me jealous? It was comical if anything.

“Maybe you can buy me a drink?” Sasha was suddenly on her feet sprinting out toward the bar with Fiona. She never was one to stick around. Pretty sure she hated quality timewith me just as much as I did.

“Who was that?” Freya nudged me pointing at Fiona as she and Sasha disappeared behind a bar pillar.

Instead of delving into my tumultuous history with Fiona, a conversation I knew would only cast me in an unfavorable light in Freya’s eyes, I opted to diffuse the tension. Waving down a waitress, I signaled for drinks to smooth the air.
