“Did I just hear that correctly?” Freya stammered, her hands running through her hair as if she was about to pull it out. “Is Tina like you? A succubus?”

I didn’t need words. I simply nodded and her head shook in disbelief.

“Did you know each other the other night? Is that why she didn’t like you?” She asked.

Ah, so she said something to sway Freya’s opinion of me. Noted.

“I can’t speak on her behalf, but I for one knew who and what she was. We have a rather small group here in the States, and while she’s not one to run with the typical succubus crowds here, I never forget a face. And I have most definitely seen her at this club before.” I gave a casual, easygoing shrug, downplaying the significance of the revelation to her.

“H-how is that possible? I’ve known her for years. How?” Her eyes widened in search of answers that I couldn’t give her. That was Tina’s problem now.

“Didn’t you ever wonder how she attracted everyone to her?”My brow rose.

She nibbled on her lower lip, as if grappling with her own thoughts. “Well, yeah. I just thought she was a big flirt or something.”

“You never wondered why she didn’t have many friends or how it was hard to hold any kind of relationship?” I continued.

“But how come I never noticed it? Wouldn’t something like that be obvious? Wouldn’t I know?” She demanded, her head shaking slightly, a mix of frustration and disbelief in her tone.

“Freya, she’s not entirely succubus. She still ages like a human and eats like a human. Halflings are typically more of what they are bred with, and in her case, her mother was probably human and didn’t even know her father was part succubus. It’s rare for the gene to be passed, but not impossible.”

“So, what, she just fucks all the time and seduces people? Why haven’t I ever felt like that around her? Wouldn’t that affect me too?”

I laughed. Had she really not gotten it yet? “Freya, you’re not entirely human. You’re something else, and that is why you are unable to be afflicted by our darkness.”

Darkness, a word I used because it felt fitting.

Our lifestyle is quite sadistic if you really think about it but seeing as how it’s the only way for us to survive, we typicallydon’tthink like that. Sort of like how a Lion can’t feel bad about eating its prey, no matter how beautiful it may seem.

Jimmy soon appeared around the corner, making eye contact at perhaps the worst timing. His greasy hair hung shaggily over his eyes, and his lips were pursed in a sly manner.

“Dustin,” he greeted, extending his hand toward me, though his eyes lingered on Freya. “And who might this be that I sawin the hall earlier?”

Freya popped upward, her hands flying into her lap as she fidgeted nervously. “I’m Freya.” She spoke, but it was staggered and quiet. At least she wasn’t running that mouth of hers.

His brow lifted slightly as he glanced at her, then shifted his attention to me. “So, I don’t mean to disturb your night, but I had hoped you had an answer to my proposal.”

His proposal being a bribe of course. Discussing my latest victims in front of Freya wasn’t exactly the ideal scenario, so I preferred to avoid that conversation in her presence.

“Let’s get a drink, shall we?” I said, standing up from the table and giving my farewell nods to Oliver and Freya. And as we walked away from the table, I hesitated to break eye contact with Freya.

I watched her until we were clear out of view, a strange pit growing in my stomach as if I was terrified to leave her alone with my brother.

Chapter 11

Freya

I watched as Dustin disappeared into the crowd, leaving me alone with Oliver and my thoughts. I wasn’t sure which of those two scared me more.

The music swelled, overpowering even the captivating pull from the dancing sirens, their eyes fixed on ensnaring me with their alluring gaze.

I sat there for a few moments, and out of what felt like thin air, the same waitress from before materialized. Her thin, lanky arm stretched out onto the table as she placed a few shot glasses down before disappearing as swiftly as she had appeared. In fact, it happened so quickly that I blinked, and she was gone. Like the wind, the only thing she left behind was the gust that rippled by me. Well, that and the drinks.

Without thinking, I found myself grabbing one of the shots, letting its foul liquid press against my lips making the hairs on my nose stand up. I tilted it back feeling the sting of it as it hit the back of my throat, and I made a sour face as I swallowed.

It wasn’t a flavor I recognized, and I’m not exactly a connoisseur of alcoholic beverages. But even to my untrained palate, this tasted strange. There was a hint of lavender andsomething else I couldn’t quite put my finger on. It left my mouth with a tingling sensation, like little electric shocks were lightly playing on my tongue.

As the tingles made their way down my throat, a mild panic filled me as well as a feeling of regret for my lack of hesitation. It could have been drugged for all I knew, and I lacked the common sense to stay vigil.
