“I saw it in the hallway. I saw how badly you wanted him. Anyone would be able to see it.”

“So then, why are you asking?” I retorted, shifting in my seat uncomfortably.

“Just curious. Guess that answers my question anyway.”

The conversation awkwardly fizzled out, leaving us sitting in silence. It felt like hours, although realistically, only five minutes had passed. I gazed into the crowd, eyeing everyone with eager suspicion while also consciously avoiding Oliver’s slightly curious stares as he looked at me occasionally.

I had seen what Dustin meant about it being dangerous here. The more my eyes wandered, the more they saw things they probably shouldn’t have.

In the far-right corner, it was almost like a ball of redness filling the corner. A pair of red eyes spilled blood as it drained from a poor girl who- while losing enough blood to fill a swimming pool- was screaming a sheer terror number of cries. And yet, no one looked beside me. No onecared.

Vampires, I mentally noted.

Even though movies should have prepared me for seeing all this, it still sent a shrill down my spine at the thought of that girl being drained dry. I couldn’t see much else from here, but the lights above illuminated the redness in their corner, and as I met another set of red eyes, I quickly turned away.

Above me, those taunting girls danced in cages.

I could hear their lulling songs whispering in my ears as if it was droning out the loud club music and narrowing into me. Occasionally, I caught myself humming along, lost in the rhythm, until my gaze shifted upward. As the lights flickered around their faces, the enchanting allure turned into a momentary horror. It was as if their expressions morphed, if only for a second, revealing sharp fangs and eyes that widened into haunting voids. The shift from beauty to terror was enough to send a chill down my spine, even if brief.

It was all I could notice in the short flash, but it was enough for me to realize something genuinely dark behind their beauty—something lurking.

To the far left, a group of women congregated. Some bore a resemblance to the girls from the hallway earlier, while others were unfamiliar faces. Their blonde locks gracefully cascaded around their necks, and their cool blue eyes scanned the dance floor as if on the hunt for someone. They were likely searching for Dustin, just as I was.

Even after examining everybody that I could see, I still hadn’t found Dustin. I mean, this club was large, but notthatlarge. All I could think is that he must have been perfectly hidden away, behind some pillar or person. Perfectly out of view from me. But why? What was he hiding?

It felt like I was in a den of monsters.

I broke my silence when I noticed Tina’s frantic head bobbing in and out. Her green eyes finally landed on my blue ones, accompanied by a wide smile of relief.

“Freya!” I could hear her breathily cry out as she sprinted rather aggressively to me, knocking random dancers to the floor and using the momentum to push her closer to me. Her brows arched angrily as she noticed Oliver beside me, but shesaid nothing as she slid into the booth, giving me the warmest hug and tightly tugging me into her arms.

“Are you okay? What did they do to you?” She examined me, her eyes intent on finding something wrong. She poked at my shirt, my pants, practically everything until she cried with joy, hugging me once more. It felt like a grizzly was hugging me.

Well, a grizzly that smelled like heavy perfume, and was that glitter on her?

Oliver sighed as he inched closer to me, his arm pushing Tina back. “You’re causing a scene, love.” His eyes lifted to the bodies swarming us, their red neon orbs wide and curious. Hungry almost.

“I don’t give a fuck, blondie,” Tina growled in response, trying to push past Oliver’s hand, but this time he made sure to reach over me in a full attempt to shield me from Tina, who was dramatically trying to grab me and run, or so I assumed as she stood up.

“Sit down, love,” Oliver spoke, his left hand reaching over my shoulder to pull me into him. His heart beat unusually slowly, like a clock ticking beneath my fingers.

Tina hissed, stomping her foot slightly as she reluctantly slid back in, but Oliver kept me close. He withdrew his arm that had braced me and instead wrapped it around my shoulders. It felt more like I was being smothered in place. Knowing better than to protest at this point, I remained silent, which only fueled Tina’s anger. She eyed me with a mix of confusion and frustration.

“What did you do to her?” Tina directed the question to Oliver. “Why is she so calm right now?”

Tina knew me better than anyone. I was more stubborn than she was at times, so I knew how it must have lookedto see me quiet at a bar in the middle of the day among everything else that happened today. I opened my mouth to respond, but Oliver interjected first.

“I’m sure the shot of Silver tongue she decided to down helped, but you could say we’ve had a day.”

“Silver tongue? Why would you give her that?” She pressed her hand to her forehead. “So kidnapping is just your average Tuesday, huh?”

“I could be mistaken, but you’re no better than we are.” Oliver retorted, his tone sharp with a hint of defiance.

“I don’t kidnap people against their will!” She hissed in response.

“Oh, but don’t you? Let me tell you how most of your nights probably go. You meet a guy at a bar, and he is entranced by you, begging to go home with you. You fuck him, and then kick him out in the morning as he’s dazed and confused about what happened.” Oliver glanced at me at the word “fuck” making me extremely uneasy, but then continued. “Sounds a lot like kidnapping for the night. Considering they’re under your succubus seduction.”

For the first time, I witnessed Tina speechless. Her eyes widened. Her mouth twisted as if trying to come up with what to say but to no avail. And while she might not have had anything to say, I sure as hell did.
