When I reached, my hand got snapped downward by his leg, kicking me down. It knocked me harder than I expected, as if he wasn’t as frail as the other deathwalker. As if he had the same kind of strength as a vampire. Something I was not capable of fighting off without my abilities.

I felt useless.

He stampeded past me, grabbing hold of Sasha. His hands wrapped around her neck as Oliver and I watched perilously.

“Your kind has become weak. Pathetic, really.” The deathwalker took an inhale, draining her life from her body. I had to watch as her face flushed white, and then, with the grasp of his hand, he twisted her head off her shoulders. It was almost as if he had crumbled the very skin attaching it to her body.

Her body slumped onto the floor as the room began in a widespread panic. Vampires sprinted out the door, not caring if the sunset burned their skin off. Other creatures fled, screaming as they rippled through the bodies that mangled at the entrance in a knot of pure mayhem.

Silence had washed over me. I couldn’t hear Oliver as he tried to shake me back to reality and pulled me to my feet. I couldn’t hear the cries as the man tore through the crowd, ripping heads off like he was thegoddamnheadless horseman.

All I could hear was Sasha’s voice playing in the back of my mind.

I could hear her annoying laugh, the way she always teased me, replaying in my mind as I watched her head swivel near her body, blood pooling from her neck like a spigot. And all I could think was that I had failed her.

I was supposed to protect her. Protect themall.

And I failed.

Chapter 14

Freya

Seeing that monster rip Sasha’s head off had me springing back to my senses.

I still felt hazy, but I knew the adrenaline was rushing through my veins, putting me in a fight-or-flight feeling. Flight most definitely taking over fight.

Jimmy was long gone when I turned around, and so were most of the people I had eyed in the club.

Oliver had ushered Tina and me out of the booth once chaos filled the club, but Dustin still stood in place as if he could not move. His eyes wouldn’t unlock from his sister’s head as if he was blaming himself for her death.

I had called out his name several times, but he didn’t budge.

I could feel Oliver and Tina pulling me away. They tore at my shirt, grasping onto me until I broke free, knowing what I had to do. It was my turn to save Dustin. All I could think about was when I was frozen with fear earlier today, and he had been my savior, and I knew I had to do that for him. I could see the way he just stood there, paralyzed. It was exactly how I had been.

I tore through what felt like a tide of sweaty bodies. Theirscreams were so loud that they almost felt like one constant ringing in my ear. And when I finally reached Dustin, I let my fingers clasp around the neckline of his shirt to pull him to my eye level. I ripped him downward and watched as the light in his eyes flickered back faintly.

“Dustin!” I yelled in his face, unsure if he heard me or not.

“What?” It was almost an unrecognizable growl. A voice that didn’t seem like the one I had gotten to know these past two days. Not the same cocky asshole, but like a disgruntled man with a need for vengeance.

“We have togo!” I tugged him once more, desperate for him to follow me.

“I-I can’t leave them likethat.” He pointed to his father and sister’s bloody heads being kicked by every passerby that ran through. Their blood streaked with footprints along the tiled flooring.

“I understand your pain.” I cried out. “Probably more than you would think.” He blinked at me, but said nothing. “Tina is all I have left, and she’s not even blood.” I continued, praying he might hear me and that I might kick some sense into him. “But you need to know that staying around will only get you killed! And if you die, they died for nothing!”

I knew he heard me because his body tensed at my words, but that didn’t stop him from blanking and staring into the crowd. His expression turned dark when they landed on the deathwalker.

And while I was trying to bring Dustin back to reality, the deathwalker had gotten lost in reveling in the crowd, his mouth grinning as he tore through bodies like it was some sport to him. He continued to reach forward, grabbing random individuals and feasting on their flesh as he regeneratedas the deathwalker had with the security guard earlier today.

Only this man seemeddifferent.

He seemed darker and far stronger than the tiresome soul who tried grabbing me earlier this morning.

I started to drag Dustin, using everything in me to pull him back to the hidden door we entered through. Now and then, I even had to slap myself to shake the fuzzy feeling of silver tongue that kept wanting to creep back in as I drunkenly tried to heave Dustin’s weight into me. Luckily, Oliver suddenly appeared next to me. Tina, however, was nowhere in sight. I had hoped that meant that Oliver had led her to safety, but I didn’t have time to worry about her. She was smart. She knew better than to stick around. I had to believe that no matter how much I feared for her safety.

Oliver grabbed Dustin, about to throw him over his shoulder, when Dustin finally came back to us as if he was too proud to have his brother help him.
