Page 47 of The Incubus Curse

I glimpsed longingly at Dustin one last time before I opened the door and hurried out into the alley with Tina and Oliver. The two had seemingly grown thick as thieves, chatting intimately back and forth talking endlessly. Tina was enjoying having a conversation with a guy that didn’t result in him shoving his tongue down her throat instantaneously. However, I did not doubt that they would swap spit in no time.

I had forgotten that as much as Tina was a succubus, she was also very human. She never had any other friends besides me, so she probably didn’t interact with others like her. It had to have been a hard life, knowing anyone you encountered would become entranced by you. Could you imagine simply going to a bank to get a deposit and having men and women drool over you with their best attempts to please you? At first, it would be endearing, but I couldn’t imagine havingeveryinteraction like that.

Was that why Dustin liked me around, too? To ease the burden of his curse? If you could even call it that.

Oliver led Tina to a back door. A big black number 3 marked it as if that gave any inclination to what it was. The dumpster beside the mysterious door had broken bottles and plastic cups stacked inside, which, if history were to repeat itself, meant we were about to explore yet another distant club that the Ellisario’s were fond of.

I was wondering if I could handle another club. Especially looking the way I look now. The skirt I was wearing was wrinkled and stained with splatters of what resembled oil - of which I had no idea how it had gotten there in the first place. Perhaps it wasn’t oil, but whatever its liquid consistency was, I tried not to think about it. We had been in some disgusting places in the last few days, and the ‘OCD’ in me was not about to go down a rabbit hole thinking about it.

And my shirt was far beyond reproach. Wrinkled and folding in places it never did before. Not to mention, I had been living in these clothes for days now, and while I wouldn’t say they reeked, I also wouldn’t say they smelled clean. My hair was a tangled mess, and my makeup had to be smeared in every which way.

I looked like a train wreck.

And as much as I wanted to claim everyone looked like this, it was, in fact, only me. Dustin still smelled insanely nice, frustrating me that he could not sleep or shower and still looked as put together as he was after so many days.

How was that even possible? Unless succubus didn’t sweat, either.

Wait.

Did they?

Tina was perfect, as always. Her hair fell in the same way it always had. She looked no different than when she ran to me in the last club. It almost gave me deja vu thinking of the three of us in yet another club wearing and looking the same.

I tried my best to pat my hair down, the curls spiraling out with minds of their own. I tucked the sweat-stained shirt into my skirt and awkwardly sniffed myself as if that would make me feel any better about this situation.

My heart bled through my veins at the sound of Dustin chuckling beside me.

“Did you just smell yourself?” He laughed, killing me from embarrassment.

Because that was how I wanted him to see me, as the girl who sniffs her pits because she smells.

I rolled my eyes, ignoring him. “Are we going in?” I directed my question to Tina and Oliver, who were whispering secrets to each other.

Oliver’s head tilted back, probably the first time in two days that I had seen his face and not the back of his head.

“Just keep your heads down, please, ladies.” Was all he said as the door opened and the bright flashing lights blinded me.

Chapter 17

Dustin

As we walked through the club’s back door, I felt the need to grab Freya’s hand.

It was almost second nature to me now to protect her.

I knew it was the best way to ensure she didn’t stumble into a frenzy or lock eyes with someone she shouldn’t. But I also knew it was because I wanted everyone in that room to know she wasmine.

I almost dared for someone to try to touch her, for someone to harm a single blonde hair on that illuminating head of hers. Because if they did, their last good thought would be all but a faded memory until every bit of my darkness clouded their mind.

Her soft hand entangled with my own so perfectly that it almost felt natural to hold it again.

I hadn’t realized how much I longed for her touch until now. And even though we hadn’t spoken much since our encounter at the strip club, I felt she understood why I said what I said. She was surprisingly understanding of everything happening to her. It was calming.

Her eyes blinked up at me with curiosity, probably confused by me, but she didn’t say anything. Instead, she looked at Tina with wide eyes and a grin as if the two were speaking telepathically to each other.

Girls always have the strangest way of knowing what other girls think just by looking.

The door was loud, creaking against the floor. Bright red neon lights flickered in and out of view as the music hummed lowly like whispers. I couldn’t even make out the words. It sounded like snakes eerily sauntering in my ear, slithers of words slurring into each other.
