“Long story,” she said.

“We have much to share,” Ben noted. “We found Divina and Andros. They’re here at the Yukon now.”

“What! That’s great!” Annie exclaimed. “How—”

“Actually, they found us,” Ben corrected himself. “Just like Zai and Sin found us. They said they could feel the pull of dragons and Beasts gathering in one place. They simply followed that thread, and it led them here.”

“Annie, I called to recall you all back to the Yukon,” he stated soberly.

Annie could hear the tension in his voice.

“What’s going on, Ben?”

“There’s a war coming, whether we like it or not. I can feel it.”

“War? What do you me—”

“The shadow dragons. Shadow assassins. Whatever they are, I think they come from the same source. Might even be the same creatures.”

“They are,” Annie inserted. “I know it to be true. Lance, Arthur, and a bunch of the others saw the shadow assassins transform into dragons.”

“Looks like we have a lot to catch up on.”

“We do,” Annie agreed. “But go on. Why do you think a war is coming?”

“Dragons are not meant to exist on earth, Annie,” Ben said.

“The Master of the Celestial Realm has said it many times to a few of us. The scrolls of the Pure and Dark Ones said the same. Dragons are too powerful to exist in the mortal realm. And yet, we’ve been finding them, gathering them across time and space, and breaking them out of their prisons in the Celestial Realm. The Universal Balance or the Jade Emperor who guards the Balance won’t allow it. Not for long.”

“Or, it could be someone else,” Annie said thoughtfully.

“I don’t necessarily think the JE is the enemy. Lance told all of us at the Shield the conversation he had with the Master when he was trapped in the Celestial Realm. It didn’t sound like the JE was against us. It didn’t sound like he waswithus either. But based on what Lance said, I don’t know that he’s the one sending assassins, dragons or otherwise.”

“Then who?” Ben asked.

“We’re not going to solve it here and now,” Annie said. “I take it you want us to come back to the Yukon to debrief and plan?”

“Yes. It would be helpful while you’re in NYC to invite a few representatives of the Shield and Cove to return with you. I have a feeling whatever this is—it could impact all of us.”

“Sophia knows about as much as we know by now,” Annie shared. “I can request an audience with Ramses while I’m in the City.”

“Do. Both the Pure and Dark Ones should be on guard. They should fortify their base defenses. There’s no telling what our foe is after. I have a feeling it’s more than just dragons. Dragons are a means to an end. Think about it. Why would someone be trying to collect the most powerful creatures on heaven and earth? Second only to the magic of long-dead gods?”

“To harness their power for their own purposes,” Annie mused, thinking out loud.

“Why would anyone need so much power?” Ben asked, leading the witness.

“So that they can dominate those that are weaker than them,” Annie deduced.

“A reckoning is approaching,” Ben stated.

“I feel it. We must prepare for it. Bring as many reinforcements from the Cove and Shield as Ramses and Sophiacan spare. If we clash in an ultimate battle, the Yukon is as good a place as any. Away from more populated areas.”

“Roger that,” Annie confirmed.

“When do you think it will happen?”

There was a long pause on the line.
