“Only because I do not understand why they find it so enjoyable,” Lancelot replied.

This was not strange. He often observed people around them, including Arthur and his men, as if he was removed from it all. As if he was not quite the same species.

“It is beneficial to let the body rule us sometimes,” Arthur said. “To let it have its way and take control. Dancing could be one such activity, when you lose yourself to the music and drumbeats. When you simplyfeel.”

Lancelot glanced at him, his silver eyes glinting in the dark.

“Do you want to dance?”

For a moment, Arthur pretended that he’d been asked to dance. But that wistfulness only lasted a moment. Of course, the taciturn warrior would ask no such thing.

“I am satisfied to watch,” he replied. “I like sitting here with you.”

Lancelot was silent for a while. Then, in a low voice Arthur could barely hear, he said:

“I do not know why you stay with me when others seem to have a much better time. I don’t make you laugh. I don’t have much to say, let alone anything that could be construed as amusing.”

Arthur smiled.

“Ah, but you are endlessly fascinating just by being you, my friend. I am content to watch your face and imagine what you might be thinking.”

“I have no expressions,” Lancelot pointed out. “I don’t see what you could find interesting.”

“You do,” Arthur argued.

But was interrupted by a rather persistent girl who decided to make her intentions clearer by sitting in Arthur’s lap, forcing his arm to wind about her waist to stop her from squirming her round arse against his groin.

She wrapped her arms around his neck and tried to woo him with a kiss, but he turned his face away at the last second and whispered in her ear instead.

She pouted at his words, but he grinned apologetically at her and swatted her bottom playfully, sending her on her way with a giggle, her disappointment abating as she rejoined the dance.

Arthur looked back at Lancelot and barked out a short laugh.

“See! That expression right there. Priceless!”

The knight quickly tried to school his features into the semblance of equanimity.

“I don’t know what you mean.”

“You just looked as if you’ve swallowed a toad,” Arthur said, light with glee.

A grimace flickered across Lancelot’s face.

“People can be too…insistent,” he explained his annoyance. “They don’t respect boundaries.”

“I don’t mind people going after what they want,” Arthur said. “I am more than capable of telling them no if it is not also what I want.”

“What do you want?” Lancelot blurted, then immediately snapped his mouth shut as if he hadn’t meant to ask the question out loud.

You.

That was the first and only thing that came to Arthur’s mind.

He didn’t know exactly what he meant by it, but he knew it to be truth.

Instead, he said, “I’d like to get away from here for a while. Find someplace quiet. Care to join me?”

Lancelot nodded.
