Realizing the sound I just made, my eyes pop open and I find Jaxon staring at me. His ocean blue eyes no longer mischievous but now show a hunger.

I clear my throat, and say, “What does the anchor stand for?”

“For someone sitting far away, you sure do pick up on details,” He mutters as he cuts his chicken and picks up a forkful.

My lips curve and I shrug. “Twenty-twenty vision. I’ve always been able to pick up on details from afar. So, what does it stand for?”

His gaze leaves mine and looks away as he chews. “It’s a long story. I’m saving up money to get it removed, anyway.”

“Huh. Okay…”

He shrugs and continues eating, leaving an awkward silence between us whilst I sit there itching for more information about the tattoo.

As I make my way through most of the meal, I ponder how to approach the topic when his cell vibrates. He checks the caller, then glances at me before picking up the call.

“Hey, what’s up buddy?” he says casually.

The way his eyes flash to mine and then back down to the table where he is fiddling with the napkin makes me wonder if he’s putting it on or not.

I don’t know what is happening on the other end of the line, but I can hear another man not sounding happy.

“Yes, Greg. I know.” His expression hardens, and I sense his frustration. “Trust me, I was just as annoyed as you. She threw me off, but I wrapped it up on a positive note. Sorry for disappearing quickly. I just wanted to get out of there and havesome space. Anyway, let’s talk about it later. I’m at lunch. Okay, see you then. Bye.” He hangs up, puts the phone down and pointedly continues with his meal.

Jaxon glances up and says, “Sorry. Brother,” as he shoves the cell phone in his pocket.

Before I get the chance to ask if everything is okay, a waiter approaches us and asks if we’re done with our meals. We nod, and he takes the plates, then says, “Would you like to order anything else?”

I look at Jaxon’s gorgeous face, and shrug. “Do you want a drink?”

“Yeah, why not? I’ll have a Whiskey Sour, please,” he says to the waiter.

I hold up two fingers and grin. “Make that two, please.”

Chapter Seven

JAXON

The lunch started out with a bit of banter, but the disappointing call from Greg ruined a bit of the buzz I had.

I quickly send him a text as a follow-up to the conversation. I didn’t want to continue in front of Abigail.

Me: Hey, sorry, buddy. I’m having lunch with another author who is doing a book signing of hers too. I prefer to focus on her than the shitshow this morning. It’ll be fine. All good.

Greg: You’re with a woman, I’ll let it slide. Go you, bro!

I suppress an eye-roll and shove the cell phone into my pocket.

The drinks arrive quickly, and we drink them as if we’re parched. I flag a waiter down and we order another two.

Abigail is now loosening up, and when the second round of drinks arrives, we jump into them too.

Taking a swig of the Whisky Sour, she says, “You know, my actual name is Abigail. Not this flamingo you refer me to. Just wanted to set that straight.”

Whilst I already know that, I play ignorance is bliss.

“What a beautiful name for a beautiful woman.”

She bursts out laughing and makes a cringe. “That would never work onanyperson. Even a silver fox knows that’s a cringe worthy line.”
