Page 43 of The Book Signing

I follow the scent of food, ending up at the resort’s restaurant, ready to get my fill of fresh, cooked breakfast galore.

When I go to the small reception desk again, I am met with the same person as the other, who grins at me in recognition.

“Good morning! Let me lead you to your table.” She has an enthusiastic expression, and my gut tells me it’s because she ensured the booking this time was correct.

The table is the same too. Go figure.

I take a seat, thanking her at the same time as I place my purse beside me on the floor.

A buzzing noise and a ping grab my attention, and I fish out my cell. Except a husky voice takes my attention elsewhere, and rather than checking the phone, I place it on the table instead.

“Looks like this is serendipity. I’m at this table too.”

I look up and find Jaxon grasping the back of the chair opposite me.

“Huh? How’s that–”

Quickly, I watch his amused expression appear instead of the serious one. Then he adds, “Just joking. Although wouldn’t that be funny if it happened again?”

I can’t help but smile, despite rolling my eyes at his joke. It’s ironic how the other day I hated the idea of him sitting with me at the table, but now the feeling is on a more pleasant note.

“Well, your company isn’t too bad,” I say cheekily, giving him a little smirk. “I mean, now you no longer have Mr. Annoying as a nickname.”

Jaxon guffaws as he takes a seat opposite me and leans his elbows on the table, showing those irresistible eyes of his, sucking me right into that vortex.

“Did you seriously give me that nickname?” His tone is incredulous.

Nodding, I grin and shrug my shoulders. “Well, I didn’t know your name. You kept appearing out of nowhere, and you gave me a nickname too, mocking my hair color.”

He chuckles and moves his hand towards my cheek, finding a strand that got loose from my ponytail and playfully twirls it around his finger.

“It is quite a vivid color; you’ve got to admit. But it makes you… you. I like it.”

My smile widens at his comment. At his shameless flirting, even if I know, it’s likely a farce to get me back to being ‘physical’ with him.

Also, not happening.

“Thanks, I like it too.” I clear my throat and gesture towards the buffet table. “I’m going to take the last opportunity to stuff myself. Are you going to eat something too?”

Jaxon turns around, his nose whiffing in the delicious scents of the goodness of fresh breakfast.

“Yep, I’m ready to eat. I didn’t have time to see if you…” he pauses, and I see a crease in his forehead, like he is thinking about something. Then he chuckles and says, “I need to rejuvenate myself after last night.” He winks and gets out of his seat and heads over to where all the delightful food awaits.

I’m just about to get out of my seat when a guy comes over to the table. “Hey, sorry, but was that Jaxon Sunters?” I look up at him and take in the look I used to fall for. Brown hair gelled and styled, tight tank top and black jeans. Then Jaxon pops into my mind.

I clear my throat. “I don’t know his full name… Why?”

He looks over at him, then glances back at me. “Huh. Wow, he’s smooth. Gets the girls withouteven giving them his name.” He grins. “Did he like, make up a name, or just smooth his way into your—”

He doesn’t get to finish as I hold my hand in the air, the universal sign of ‘don’t even continue that sentence.’

“This is absolutely none of your business. You want to find out, ask the man in question.”

I want to punch the douche, but my mind is reeling at his words.

Is his name real? Has he ever given a fake name to a woman he slept with? That’s fucked up.

The guy backs away, but I take the opportunity to ask my question this time. I guess curiosity gets the best of me.
