My face falls and I freeze. “Oh,” is all that leaves my mouth as disappointment floods me.

I honestly thought he was still single. Had I ruined what could have been between us by distancing myself and being so distrusting?

He shoves his hands into his pockets and says, “See, my heart has fallen for a strong, sassy woman who used to have pink hair. I just want to be transparent with you in case you catch feelings for me.”

The tension seeps out of me, now filled with a sense of relief, and I laugh, taking a playful poke at his arm. Jaxon gives me a teasing smile in return, catching my hand before I retract.

“Well, lucky her. Thank you for letting me know in advance. I should let you get to her then.”

Jaxon steps closer to me, his mesmerizing eyes making the butterflies fluttering inside my stomach go tenfold. Then he leans in and puts his forehead against mine before he whispers against my lips, “No, I’m the lucky one.”

Epilogue

CHANTELLE

Ten Years Later…

The room is full of tables and people talking loudly. I miss my friends though, so this place isn’t interesting to me at all. Even my brother thinks this place is boring. But dad and mum love it here.

“Good morning, Mr. and Mrs. Sunters, please follow me,” an old lady says to my parents.

I follow them until they stop at a table and glance at each other, which is weird because their expression is more surprised than usual.

“Come on, let’s sit down already. I’m so hungry,”Daniel whines.

Mom looks at my dad and laughs, whispering something about the same table. When we sit down, I choose the chair next to mom, and Daniel, as usual, next to dad.

The waitress points out where the buffet is and my stomach grumbles with excitement.

Daniel and I race over and pile our plates, then return to the table and start eating. My brother sits there stuffing his face, and it’s disgusting to watch. I literally have to whip my head the other way. Just gross.

When my stomach is finally full, I sit back and relax, whilst the rest of the family eats. I turn my head and look at all the hotel rooms and the balconies.

They must have such a good view. Wish I had that. Our room is boring.

Suddenly, I notice a balcony with its door wide open. “Look over there!” I point towards it, and everyone turns their heads in that direction.

“What’s wrong with it?” Mom asks, shrugging her shoulders. I roll my eyes and point again. “The door is wide open. What if someone breaks in? Aren’t they worried?”

Daniel squints and mutters, “They should get blinds, or better curtains. Dude, you can see rightinside the room.” He laughs and then goes back to filling his mouth with eggs.

Mom and dad don’t seem to be worried, and then mom says, “Yes, they should invest in better curtains.”

Dad nods and says, “Yeah, you never know what surprises you may find in there.”

Mom giggles and says, “Really, Jaxon?” then puts her head into her hands, shoulders moving from the laughter.

Dad just shrugs as he chuckles behind his coffee cup.

I look at them, confused at why they are laughing about curtains.

“Uh, what’s so funny?”

They stop and glance over at me, but before anyone gets the chance to respond, the old lady who brought us over to the table interrupts us.

“Sweet kids,” she says, nodding towards me and Daniel. “I didn’t think I would see you two here again. Looks like you’ve made it full circle.”

Mom looks up at dad and gives him one of her playful smiles, then says, “You remember me without the pink hair?”

She laughs and says, “I remember that yellow pineapple print, and we have pictures from the event.”

All three of them chuckle and, with a quick coffee order, the old lady waves at us and leaves. I’m still trying to wrap my head around one detail that struck out during that conversation.

“Wait, your hair used to be pink?”
