Every inch of him felt hard and toned. I made fists with my hands and started pounding on his back, screaming at him to let me go.

“Patrick!” I called out to my friend in anguish. He stared helplessly, unsure of what to do. The shame of not being able to stop my kidnapping was evident in his features, causing me pain in a different way. I lost sight of him as thegiant wolf deposited me in a shiny black car and locked the door.

I struggled with the latch, trying desperately to unlock it. He chuckled at my frantic movements as he slid into the driver’s seat.

“Little wolf, you will find that your door cannot be unlocked from the inside. You’d do best to save your energy for the things I have planned for us.”

He gave me a wicked look, and I shuddered. “I would never do anything with you. If you let me go, we can talk, but that’s all I’m offering.”

“We will talk, for it seems there is a lot we need to set straight between us,” he agreed. “But make no mistake, you’re mine, and I’m not letting you go.”

His car pulled away from my house, leaving Ella alone in the front yard. I turned away from her, not wanting her to watch me become completely unglued.

I curled my knees in front of myself, doing my best to shield my breasts from his view. He did not comment on my lack of clothing or anything else until we were back at the Feldman Hotel.

After parking, he reached into the center console and tossed an XL T-shirt in my direction. As much as I wanted to disappear into the fabric, I made no attempt to put it on. I tilted my chin, challenging him to say something about it.

“We can sit here for as long as you like, but we are not leaving the car until you’re covered.” The stranger leaned back in his seat to get comfortable, letting me know that waiting for my cooperation was no issue for him.

“Why are you doing this to me?” I asked quietly, changing tactics, and hoping that he had a sensitive natureunder the hard exterior. “I want to go home. Please take me home.”

His eyes softened at my request. “Iwilltake you home. My pack will be very excited to meet you.”

It took every ounce of control I had not to rip the look of sympathy off his stupid face. I struggled to keep my expression innocent. “I want to go home with my family, not yours. Please just let me out of the car.”

He stilled, searching my face. “I think,” he said slowly. “That you are a very skilled actress. Growing up in a pack yourself, you must know that after we solidify our bond, your home will be with me.”

“I don’t want to mate with you. Or with anyone.”

“What?” His voice hitched in surprise. Clearly, he was not expecting me to say that. To his credit, I was probably the only one of our kind who felt that way. “The goddess made us two halves of the same whole. We will mirror and complement each other perfectly. You’re upset and not thinking rationally.”

For a fleeting second, I felt horrible for the shadow of rejection that passed over him. But it was gone so quickly that I wasn’t sure if I had imagined it.

“You knew I didn’t want this. Why else would I run and hide from you?” I asked sharply.

He gave me a sheepish look. “I’ve heard of some females giving chase to make their mate prove his worth before agreeing to become his. I thought you were testing me. And, believe me, I would never back down from a challenge issued by you.”

His eyes lit with renewed fire, and he took the opportunity to skim his gaze over my naked body. I gulpedand pulled my knees back in front of myself, suddenly self-conscious. This was headed in the wrong direction. He frowned at my movement.

“Do not cover yourself with me. Your beauty was made for me and my eyes alone.”

A new idea flickered in my mind, remembering his rage at the hotel. It was risky to set him off again, but maybe he would relent if he understood the extent of my sexual history.

“Others have seen me. Other men.” I took a breath, trying to form the words correctly and not turn to goo under his heated stare. “Other men that I have had sex with. Plural. More than one.”

The silence that followed was like someone had suctioned the air out of the car. I watched as he swallowed hard, like the information I had given him was painful to process. His hands shook slightly as he gripped the steering wheel, but when he finally spoke, his voice was even and eerily calm.

“I will need their names so I can hunt them down like the man in the hotel room. When I got there, and his sheets and body smelled of you, sealing his fate. These other men will be no different.”

My heart sank as I realized that my words did not make him want me less. Instead, they just incited him to more violence. Without another word, I slid the shirt over my head and folded my arms, ready to leave the car.

He gave a short nod and left to come to the passenger’s side and open my door. As soon as he crossed to the other side, I rushed to the driver’s seat and forced his door open. The handle gave easily, and I spilled out onto the cement, shifting as I fell and landing on all fours.

At my direction, my wolf took off in a dead run across the parking lot, ignoring the reaction of our mate behind her. The fence around the hotel property was made of wood, and parts of it had broken away with age.

Her eyes searched for a break in the fencing large enough for her body, and she spotted a single missing panel. She was just small enough to make it out, but there was no way our pursuer would fit.

She slowed and forced her way through, wincing as the splintered wood caught on some of her fur and pierced her skin. Our mate was closing in, trying to force his way through the hole that was much too small for him. It held him for now, but it wouldn’t be long until his strength allowed him to break one of the other panels. I called on her to turn and run. We needed every advantage we could get.
