“Thank you so much,” I say as we turn to find our room.

The room she gave us is bigger than the room we shared back home. It’s a corner room so there’s a big window in the living room. It overlooks the town. In the living room there’s a couch, which sits next to the kitchenette. Then there’s the bedroom, with another huge window. This one faces the mountains, they’re so beautiful. It also has two huge beds. And the bathroom? It has a tub! Lucy is going back and forth looking out the windows and giggling. I’ve never seen her so happy.

Now that we’re here and we have a temporary home, it’s time for me to find a job. I go over to the living room window tolook at our new home. It’s a pretty town, and from where I’m standing, I can see a bakery. It’s called Precious Risings Bakery and that’s the first place I’m going to go to. That would be a dream to work at a bakery.

“Did you want to come with me to walk around? I want to stop in that bakery over there and see if they’re hiring,” I say to Lucy.

“Is it okay if I stay here? I’ll go with you later to find food?”

“Sure, I’ll be back soon. Don’t open the door for anyone,” I say to her as she nods.

“I promise.”

I grab my purse and my room key and head out. I walk straight over to the bakery and there’s a ‘help wanted’ sign in the window. That has to be a sign that we’ve done the right thing…right?

I open the door and head inside. It smells heavenly in here—cinnamon, frosting and all kinds of sweets.

“Hi! What can I get you today?” a woman asks as she smiles at me.

“Hi, I was wondering about the ‘help wanted’ sign.”

“Are you interested in applying? Have you worked in a bakery before?”

“I am interested. And no, I’ve never worked in a bakery. But I do know how to bake.”

The woman smiles at me. “I tell you what, I’ll give you a shot. You come in tomorrow morning at three am. That’s when we start prepping and baking for the day.”

“Really? Thank you so much! I’d like to buy a few of your goodies too. Can I get a chocolate chip muffin and a strawberry shortcake?”

“Of course,” she says. “By the way, my name is Rosaura Mancini. I’m one of the owners.”

She hands me my box of pastries.

“I’m Simone. My sister and I just moved here.”

“Welcome to Lake Renegade. I hope you like it here.”

“We love it so far. How much do I owe you?”

“Nothing, that’s on me. I look forward to seeing you in the morning.”

“Are you sure?”

My parents always said no one gives anything to you for nothing.

“I’m positive. Where are you staying?”

“We’re staying at the Lakeside Hideaway.”

She smiles again. “You let me know if you have any problems. Here’s my card, it has my number on it if you need anything.”

“Thank you so much. I’ll see you at three!”

I walk out of the bakery. I can’t believe how nice Rosaura was. And I have a job! My first job, I’m so excited. I hear loud rumblings and I look up to see a few motorcycles riding down the street. I watch them as I cross the intersection. They’re all wearing vests and in the back it says Cimaruta MC Chicago. One is watching me as they head into the bakery. I don’t know why but all of a sudden I feel the need to know who he is. I must be going crazy.

When I get back to our room, Lucy is looking out the window still.

“Did you see those guys on the motorcycles? That was so cool!”
