But he wasn’t listening.

They reached the women, Molly and Archer being sullen while June gave Dragan a big hug.

“Wow, look what the cat dragged in,” Anna snickered.

Molly rolled her eyes and finished her drink, waving the bartender for another. June leaned into Dragan and whispered, “Apparently Molly and Archer have a thing, but not a good thing.”

His friend was sullenly still trying to also get the attention of the bartender. Dragan laughed and pulled June into his side. She was taller than he was used to, and he took a step back to drink her in. Four-inch heels, black jeans, a sheer black blouse with long bell sleeves and a dangerous V. Her breasts pushed up, and Dragan licked his lips at the image of kneading them, kissing them..

“Hey, D?” Her voice was husky, warm with tension. When he met her gaze, she was smiling. She leaned closer, her lips against his ear. “My eyes are up here.” Her fingers wound through his hair. The sharp smell of tequila lingered between them, and Dragan realized it’d been awhile since he’d seen June tipsy, let alone drunk. He placed a hand on the back of her neck, giving a slight squeeze as he leaned into her ear.

“I always look at your eyes, I didn’t want to this time.”

She froze against him, her breath catching.

June took a sharp breath, Dragan’s words flitting about her mind.

Had she heard him right?

Maybe the four drinks and two tequila shots were making her hallucinate. She was generally a heavy-weight, but it had been awhile since she’d really gone out with her girl friends.

She placed a hand on his chest, his muscled pec beneath the knit sweater. She ran her fingers down, slowly, trying to find each valley between his abs through the thick fabric. She’d never been able to do more than dream about this. The lines were so blurred on their relationship, June thought if this was her one chance to indulge, she was going to take it.

His breath caught, the hand on the back of her neck tensing. It was strangely controlling, in such a blatant display of caveman June had always imagined she’d hate. But coming from Dragan… The heat pooling between her legs while she stood beside him, bathed in his woodsy cologne, was a comfort, and she knew with every fiber of her being he could do anything he wanted to her.

“June…”

A warning or a beckon, she couldn’t be sure. Not in the din of a crowded bar, in the low lights of a Saturday night. Not in the haze of so many drinks.

She pulled back, desperate for more but wanting it on different terms. His eyes were dark with need, the pull between them unmistakable.

“Oh my god, you’re such an ass.” Molly’s voice broke the spell. “Don’t you have anything better to do than harass me?”

Her best friend was talking to Archer, who stood with his hands in his pockets and a smirk on his face.

Whatever he’d done or said almost didn’t matter, the smirk would definitely set Molly off.

“What did you say?” June turned to Archer while Dragan leaned against the bar behind behind, placing a large drink order.

Archer shrugged, the gleam still in his eye.

“He’s fucking infuriating,” Molly said, turning to June. “This is the ass-wipe firefighter I told you about. Every time I cook my goddamn smoke detector goes off, but the ceilings are too high for me to do anything. So every time they send this douche-canoe to just smirk in my face, and I’m so fucking tired of seeing him.”

“I’m a firefighter, I can’t remove your smoke detectors,” Archer rolled his eyes. “And harassing? You’re the one who came up to me and said I was shit at my job.”

June caught Dragan’s eye as he stepped next to his friend. He clapped a hand on his shoulder. “Molly, let me apologize for my friend. I know what an ass he can be. However, he really can’t do anything about your problem.”

“Believe me, I would love nothing more than to stop showing up at your apartment at all hours of the day and night because you don’t know how to cook.”

“Oh please, you’re just angry you can’t keep a girl long enough to feed you. Not that you’d deserve anything homemade.”

“Hey —“ Dragan tried to cut in.

“You clearly don’t know me,” Archer laughed. “I cook for myself and I choose when someone sticks around long enough. I’m sorry you’re so insecure and project your loneliness onto strangers.”

“Ha! Strangers, I’ve known your stupid ass for far too long. You’ve always been flighty, always wanting to the center of attention without giving anything back. Now you think, ‘oh I’m ex-military and run into burning buildings’ and people will just fawn over you? Get over yourself.” Molly finished her newest drink and took off toward the bathroom, June watching in stunned silence.
