“I’m going to bed,” she sighed. “Goodnight, guys.” June gave them quick hugs and left, but immediately turned around to grab the blanket she’d left behind. Her grandparents were smiling oddly at each other, dropping the look as soon as she re-entered the room.

It should be nice to have grandparent that were still disgustingly cute together.

She laid the blanket on her bed, and took off her pajama pants.

Tap

June looked at her window.

Tap

She slowly walked over to it.

Tap

She opened it, surprised to find a light spotlighting the ground below her. The cord wound in through the bookstore office window.

What the…

Dragan popped out into the spotlight, holding a speaker and singing and dancing along to one of their favorite songs.

“Even when the sky comes falling, even when the sun don’t shiiiiine…”

June burst out laughing, despite herself. “What are you doing?”

But he didn’t answer, just kept dancing and singing with his whole heart. When the song ended, June gave a small clap and put her hands on the window. “Thanks for the show, have a good night!”

“Wait!”

She sighed. “What?”

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry for shutting you out. I’m sorry for letting my shit get in the way of us. I’m sorry if my favor was too much, for either of us. I’m sorry I ruined our friendship. But most of all, I’m sorry for hurting you. You were right, it wasn’t fair. I didn’t treat you right and you deserve better. Can I please come up and speak with you? I want to show you that I will be better.”

June bit her lower lip. Her grandparents were on the couch, it was getting late…

There was a knock on her door before her grandma came in. She stood in the doorway, one hand still on the knob.

“Juney, you listen to me. That boy fought with me and Pop about putting this all together. I don’t know what happened between you, but life is too short.” She there her hands up. “There, I said my piece.” And closed the door behind her.

“What the actual fuck…” June mumbled to herself. She looked down at her best friend, the speaker hanging from his hand. He was wearing an oversized tan trench coat, and she shook her head at how far he went to replicate one of her favorite movies. The spotlight highlighted the desperation in his eyes, the pleading. Imagining him begging her grandparents to help him pull this off made it that much sweeter.

“Fine, but it better be good.”

June slammed the window shut and chewed on her nail, waiting for him to come up. He knew his way around the apartment, and she was done going to him.

His knock was slow and measured. When she opened the door, he towered above her, even leaning against the doorjamb.

“Hey, you.”

“Hey, you.” She fought the smile, but the smile won. She took a step back, letting him into her room and closing the door behind him. He’d been in her room millions of times, but this was different. The air weighed between them, charged and ready to burst. Dragan set a bag down by her dresser and took off his coat and shoes.

“I can’t believe you found the coat.”

He smiled at her. “That’s the thing you’re most impressed with?”

“Honestly, I’m a little surprised you even showed up.” She bit her lip, trying not to feel sorry for the barb.

“Oh, did I show up.” He reached into his backpack and placed the items one by one on her dresser top. “First, I know how much you like popcorn, so here are three gourmet kinds. Here’s your pick of three movies — a rom com, an action, and a horror. And then… This.”
