It was her latest thing, wanting to go without her hearing implant and get along on lip reading alone. She was legally blind even with glasses, but she saw enough to do a pretty good job understanding what was said in a conversation.

Andy tapped her shoulder again and signed,What if they aren’t looking at you?

“I’ll let them know from the beginning to always look at me if they want an answer.”

He signedLook at me, thenand said, “Go for it, cutie.”

She barked out a laugh. “Dad!”

“What’s going on, you two?” Sandra walked in, her hair tousled, yawning. “The boys aren’t up yet?”

“Max came and got them an hour ago. He’s taking all the older kids to breakfast and then some arcade.”

“Aw, you didn’t want to go?”

“No way. Bella is hellbent on lipreading.”

“Dad, bad language,” Bella said in her little voice.

“Look at your screen,” Andy replied, making everyone laugh.

“I need coffee,” Sandra said. “And do I have a story for you.”

“What’s up?”

“I’ll turn my back so the kid can’t read my lips.”

“Go for it.”

“Tony had an affair, and when he tried to break it off Friday night, the woman called Kassie and told her. It’s getting ugly.”

“They were fine at Lisa’s yesterday!”

“Evidently, she reconsidered last night.”

“Why didn’t you tell me then?” Andy asked.

“Because we had other important activities to attend to, and I didn’t want our romantic evening taken over by your selfish brother’s relationship issues.”

“I’m in shock.”

“Yeah, well, evidently it’s been going on the entire time Kassie and Tony have been together.”

“Take Bella, will you? I need to call my brother.”

Sandra brought her coffee around and set it on the table next to the rocker. She gently poked Bella and spoke to her clearly but did nothing special with her mouth. “Do you mind getting on my lap for a while?”

“Good job, Momma,” Bella said, hopping down from Andy’s lap.

“It’s difficult speaking normally with your eyes on my mouth.”

“You’re easy,” Bella said, grinning.

Taking his phone, Andy went to a small anteroom off the living room that he used as his office and recording studio when he was a guest on the news show. Closing the door, he called Tony’s number.

“Bro, I’m having breakfast at the diner. Can I call you back?” Tony asked.

“Sure. What diner?”
