Ryan smelled coffee. After dressing, he went out to ask Jolene to go with him to Lisa’s.

“That seems weird.”

“She said it’s fine, I swear. If we’re going to be together, you might as well get used to me seeing my kids. I want to do it at least once a week. I don’t see how I could manage it more often.”

Jolene set out to make toast, going through the motions in her cozy kitchen that overlooked the Williamsburg Bridge.

“You and Lisa will probably get back together.”

“Nah, I don’t see me ever commuting again.”

“So that’s the only reason you aren’t there with your family?” she asked, snickering. “I thought you mentioned the word bedlam. Bedlam is in the eye of the beholder.”

“What does that mean?”

“It just means that what is chaotic today may not be tomorrow. Not getting involved is probably smart, so I thank you.”

“We just didn’t get involved this weekend,” Ryan replied, frowning. “That might change tonight.”

“Let’s see what happens today when you’re with your family.”

“Maybe this isn’t such a good idea.”

“I know how to behave, Ryan. I promise not to embarrass you. Remember how well Lisa and I got along the weekend I was there with Dan?”

“That’s true.” He looked at his watch. “I want to be on the road in half an hour.”

“Anxious, huh?”

“No, just want to get this over with. Now I’m sorry I ever started it. If I cancel, she’ll get pissed off, and I don’t want that either.”

“Hey, I’m ready to go.” Jolene held her hands out at her sides, and Ryan checked her out.

“Beautiful.”

“Really?”

“Really.”

“You’ve never mentioned my appearance before.”

“No way,” he said.

“Yes. This is the first time.”

“Well, shame on me. You’re gorgeous. I’m honored to be with you. I’ll be proud to take you over there, where my former friends will see us together.”

“Why former?”

“They’re all pissed off at me,” he said. “Let’s go.”

After locking up her apartment, they took the elevator down in silence. Luckily, Ryan’s car hadn’t been broken into.

“If I stay here, I’ll have to rent a garage space somewhere.”

“If?”

“I’m taking it a day at a time. Can you live with that?”
